If TV manufacturers were serious about producing LCD TVs that catch up with OLED displays, they would be implementing and improving the "Dual Cell" technology that Hisense introduced in 2021. In the Hisense U9DG Dual Cell TV, a 1080p black and white panel was placed behind the 4K RGB panel. This functionally provided the TV with over 2 MILLION "local dimming zones", and as the tests in the RTINGS review demonstrated, the results were spectacular. The Dual Cell TV nearly equaled OLED displays in Contrast, Black Uniformity, Blooming, and Wide Viewing Angle. The Dual Cell TV was discontinued (probably because it cost more than other Hisense models) but this LCD technology has the potential to be a highly competitive rival to OLED TVs.

As owner of Sony X900h ("55" 2020) 4k 120Hz model (FALD).. which costs $1200 back in early 2021
I can say Sony TVs are superior overall, especially for 90 series & above..
But their price is outragoues.. X90L (65 in) is $1800 in middle east, while TCL 745C (65 in) is like $900
Videos always show cheap U.S prices.. while Euro, Asia, Africa..etc have always have higher prices for Sony
I don't care what Sony could bring to the table as long their prcices are 2x, I won't buy from them again

Mini LED can tend to crush a lot of detail in favor of getting an inky image. Sony's approach is subtle. Sony isn't the brightest or blackest, but there's more information in the image, so the result is an image that stands out and has more depth.

Great video, I thought you explained the misconception of Mini LED always being better than regular FALD TVs quite well, I saw this first hand when the QN90A and Q90T were placed next to each other the Q90T showed more detail and slightly more blooming but the QN90A crushed details to hide blooming and get closer to acting like an OLED in most scenes I thought the Q90T held up better because important details got lost on the QN90A. Also its more about the algorithm than the the amount of zones and you covered that very well.

It’s not just software — the Sony X90L’s are using their best processor, the same one used in the mini LED & OLED models (which cost 1.5 - 3X as much)

To be honest the X90L is the best upgrade you can make in the mid level tv race. They raised the zone count significantly, it's the best pound for pound upgrade for them from 2022 to 2023.

Had two oleds loved them, got burn so oled can piss off forever now. Mini led is good enough for me. Got the 65in x95l and absolutely love it and I have no fear of burn in. Win win

QUESTION: There is a a comparison between the Hisense UK7 model vs the Sony X90L online. In this comparison, there is a Starfield test. The UK7 model does not suffer from the "Too Black" problems the TCL QM8 suffers from in the FOMO video. In fact, the U7K actually has superior blacks that are deeper than the Sony X90L while simultaneously displaying more of the white stars - similar to the way an OLED is superior to the X90L. Can you confirm this, Fomo in the specific test you show here at the end of your video?

I will say that for everyday watching Sony's processing is continually underrated. If people are watching a lot of shows that aren't perfect Blu-ray 4K the Sony just absolutely shines over a lot of other competition. They're upscaling and rendering of standard definition streaming apps is fantastic.

I'm really getting annoyed with reviewers... you accomplished what you set out to do, elevate one and pull down the other... even thoug both has 2 out of 3. All the years reviewers have made a stink about dimming zones, now it's suddenly acceptable to have less.

Wow, Fomo!! Excellent video - I learned so much! You made it so easy to see and understand. Thank you!

I've been watching a few other channels that have also discussed Sony's X90L as well as their top tier mini LED the X95L and how they out perform most other mini LED TVs even though they both have less dimming zones than most of the competition and it all comes down to their processing and dimming algorithm. Sony revealed just before CES this year that they use their own proprietary tech to better focus their dimming zones as well as better control the gradient of light each zone needs rather than simply being on or off. It's actually pretty cool seeing how it works and because of it they don't need as many dimming zones. Apparently their 2024 mini LED TVs will have an even better version of this tech and some tech reporters that have seen pre-production TVs in action say it rivals current OLEDs in terms of picture quality and deep black levels.

excellent explanation, finally someone said it, i had qled full array etc and always knew im loosing many details and for what, just to say i have some kind of black level more? anyways, i gave my qled to my brother and grab a sony full array tv and honestly the viewing experience is far better and black is black just fine. Oled was and will be the target but since im doing everything from pc, my only road is led tvs. qleds are great either mini leds or not mini leds just as we are on full array class but sony has that little something that makes things much better on picture quality and overall quality is at high level on everything and thats why they are more pricey.

This is the best short-form explanation of different screen types I’ve seen yet. In a world saturated with overly-verbose videos, I appreciate how precise you are in your choice of words!

I actually watched this from my new Sony X90L. I previously had two TCL Q7'S that buzzed and reached out to you on Twitter (thank you by the way). I originally wanted a QM8 after watching you test it out but they didn't have a 55 inch. I ultimately went back to Sony (I had a Sony 900f after a 900e died just outside of the one year warranty). I've been very impressed with the Sony X90L. It's handling of low bit rate content I imagine is much better than the QM8 which should tip it for anyone watching cable TV which can vary per channel, per show or even per commercial. I do think this year's TCL remote is much more comfortable and the soft buttons are great. I also had a issue with VRR while playing Borderlands 3 on the Q7 that makes me wonder if it is present on the QM8. Turning on VRR for that specific game made it look like nighttime and the colors shifted everywhere when you used the stick. One area I think Sony needs to improve is the game bar. Other companies offer more features with their game bar. Additionally, gamers want gaming TVs with more picture adjustments as it's not always about lower response times for us. But overall, I'm supremely happy that I ended up with the Sony X90L over the Hisense U8K, TCL Q7 and QM8 or even last year's Samsung QN90B that I was considering. I don't see myself leaving the Sony nest for a long time. Lol The color and clarity are the first things you notice.

You could also throw the Q7 into the discussion. No MiniLED. Amazing contrast. Deep blacks. And I would say less blooming than the X90L. Rtings review will be coming out soon, and I will say it scored very highly with contrast and black uniformity.

Excellent topic and well covered too, X90L is the best Sony FALD since their mighty 2017 line up (x900e and x93e)

My TCL 75QM8 has been great.
Especially at $1800

I had a 6 series and the OS was great, loved the remote and overall TV was a great bargain. My issue was how I always had issues. Even used a TCL sound bar that would never connect. Support was like talking to a wall.

So there’s that. If you just want a cheap TV with features get this. I wouldn’t recommend it if it’s your main TV.
