"Valve's Next Game Is NOT Here yet" I fixed your title

I do not blame the Verge but I would argue that the ban was also a valid response from Valve. I would argue that is the real gentlemen's agreement.

Isn't Verge the same company that got into trouble for making the worst PC build guide? 😂

This feels more like a social experiment than anything else.

I have 200 hours in it and can safely say it's great. Anyone playing, be warned - you will be instantly permabanned if you pass a threshold of in game reports. No appeals.

The notion that you avoided agreeing by simply pressing a button isn’t quite accurate. The popup clearly stated, "Do not share anything, " and clicking OK wasn’t about accepting it; rather, it was more about following the instruction to make the message disappear. Alternatively, you could have pressed escape to achieve the same outcome.

The first rule about fight club, is you do not talk about fight club

I feel like the Verge has been adequately punished, I mean, they did lose access to playing the closed Deadlock playtest.

First rule of Deadlock. You don't talk about Deadlock

Second rule of Deadlock. You don't talk about Deadlock

Verge uploaded gameplay videos and got banned. Valve is constantly banning video uploaders and streamers. The subreddit doesn't have any gameplay video.

Belular you are so wrong about testing this privately. The biggest problem with testing online games is testing the strain on the server, you can only test it in test environments so much - after a point you just need to let the users help you test things to get accurate data. Also keep in mind this is a complicated game like a moba, you need various people of all skill levels playing to help you balance things. You cannot test/build such a game without the public helping you fine tune it along the way.

Words can have unknown consequences, where I used to work when answered the phone we had to say
“How may I help you, not how can I help you” because the latter entered the company into a verbal contract.

The way I view it is, if we take Valve comments in good faith, they want to let people PLAY the game, and form their OWN opinions, but they don't want people to DISCUSS the game, and have opinions formed second hand. I think there's value to that, and that their "not NDA" should still be respected. You can mention that the game exists, of course, but should not discuss its quality or contents until they feel it is ready to be scrutinized.

Its cool to see Valve make a new game but I couldn't care less about the actual game itself.

I dont know why everyone is calling it there never was an official NDA and that users could invite other users to the playtest, Valve clearly wasnt keeping it a secret to begin with.
Valve was simply asking people not to talk about it and was showing an INSANE amount of trust to users with this.

Valve 100% on the right to ban Verge, and don't be an idiot, hitting the escape key instead of using the mouse to click ok doesn't mean anything.

This is certainly the first I've heard of this.

I think Valve does not care whether you talk about the game. What they actually don't want is to have people seeing the unfinished UI and mostly placeholder assets. Every now and then Valve just drops a update that replaces a batch of the game's assets. Because there are too many placeholders, they are afraid to let everyone see all the temporary assets and make people believe this is exactly what it will look like on release.

I hate your take on the test agreement being worthless. Thats the problem with journalists

Several years ago someone set up an art piece at a museum - it was a goldfish swimming in a blender. The audience had the option to walk up and turn the blender on. Most people simply looked on and got the point, but of course, there had to be that one guy who just had to push that button. That's what the Verge did here. It's not that the Verge broke this game. It's not like Valve didn't expect this to happen. It's just ... some people were having a moment being part of something special, and the Verge just had to come along like a whiny little narc and made it about them.

This episode also perfectly demonstrates the difference between a journalist and a hack - a journalist looks to expose the truth. A hack looks for a scoop. And a hack needing to argue that a scoop was "newsworthy" is like a comedian needing to explain a punchline after it fails to land.
