Valve Patents Huge Steam Deck Upgrade

According to a recent patent submitted by Valve, the Steam Deck could get a major upgrade with new technology that allows better streaming to the system and VR integration.

While the Steam Deck is an effective system that allows gamers to play PC games on the go and natively, it's a balancing act between performance and battery life. One option that gamers can use to sidestep this issue is streaming from their desktop PC to the Steam Deck, though the biggest hurdle to this approach is latency, such as the Moonlight application. Valve appears to be working on an upgrade to the Steam Deck that can support low latency, according to a recent patent, along with high fidelity over wireless transmissions.

Valve submitted a patent for "dual detail encoding in a distributed system," which provides both low latency and high fidelity images from a host computer to another device. It specifically mentions a wireless foveated transmission and rendering between a console and a head-mounted device or handheld system. This means that not only would the Steam Deck get an upgrade that improves its streaming potential from a PC, but also a VR option.

Half Life Alyx NoVR Mod Gets Better Steam Deck Support

Half-Life Alyx launched to effectively universal acclaim in 2020. It's only arguable fault being that it was locked behind the substantial asking price of owning a VR headset. Modders have alleviated this problem since, and NoVR mod, in particular, stands out as a highlight with its Summer update

But for those unconvinced, the new Summer 2024 update of Alyx NoVR is absolutely loaded with features, such as the improved support for Valve’s own Steam Deck handheld. That’s right: you can now play Half-Life Alyx perfectly well on the Steam Deck. How’s that for impressive?

Locked 60 FPS on the Steam Deck, with gyro aiming enabled to “give the game that VR feel” in combat

All Toner Puzzles are now playable and solvable

All Steam Achievements are now obtainable through regular “flat” gameplay

Improve locomotion thanks to map edits, viewmodel changes, and a few crucial boundary edits

The new (classic Half-Life style) low-accuracy crosshair

When it come to a handheld, sure some have better specs then a steam deck. I want to get one from a company that won’t screw you over for warranty repair.

I think the reason why you see the steamdeck running well and better than other competitors is that the steamdeck's console is the OS... Linux OS and Proton compatability library gives you the ability to tune the console/OS all the way to even rebuilding the kernel and optimize the libraries like proton to further optimize for the hardware which in steamdeck's case is well defined and determined.
On the other hand with other handhelds you have some generic locked down windows OS and locked down drivers leaving you with little tuning channels, maybe only the user layer tuning

the streaming patents are likely primarily for the deckard considering how streaming steamvr to the meta quest 3 seems to be the generally accepted "best vr experience for the price" right now, but latency in vr is a real concern since the bandwidth is insane

meanwhile streaming to the steam deck is already pretty much lagless, streaming 90fps has lower latency than playing 60fps native with wifi6E + AV1, it's honestly mindblowing

Coming from the VR community the low latency focus is due to a forthcoming vr headset which will effectively have a steam deck built into it

Streaming Services sucks.
You can't install mods, some games not saving screen resolution, not all games is possible to play. It's better to play games on low settings and being in a middle of Forest or desert without any Internet connections and able to play games.
Maybe about a year of GFN it's a price of Steam Deck))
