I seem to be treating a lot more patients lately with complaints of tension headaches and neck pain.

People are spending more and more time on their computers and cell phones with poor posture and these days seem to be a little more stressful than times have been in the past.

Tension headaches are often diagnosed as a headache pain in the head that comes from pain/tension in the neck. Often times these headaches start in the back of the head right at the base of the skull and creep up and over either one half or both halves of your skull.

There are many factors that cause these tension headaches. Anything that causes increased strain on the small muscles in the top of your neck can lead to tension and stiffness in this area. The tension/stiffness from these small muscles puts pressure on nerves that exit your cranium right in this same area. The result of this pressure on these nerves is what causes your tension headache pain.

The most-common cause of tension headaches that I see is computer/desk jobs. We spend long days seated (something we’re not structurally designed to do anyway), we’ve got laptops and phones that are never at the right height, and we round forward at our shoulders to reach our keyboards and mice. It’s a horrible position to be in for your body; let alone for 8+ hours/day!

Luckily, there is a lot of the right stretches and exercises can do to alleviate the tension in these muscles, decrease the pressure on your nerves, and help your headache to feel much better.

In this video you will learn four of the best exercises to stretch these muscles and decrease tension headache pain. These are simple exercises that can be done anywhere with no equipment needed.

Now whenever I treat anyone for anything in my physical therapy clinic, my goal is always two-fold:

1. Treat the pain to help the patient feel better
2. Treat the cause of the pain so it does not return.

That said, my goals with this video are to show you the right stretches to decrease neck tension/pain and the right exercises to improve postural strength. Decreasing neck pressure and pain will help alleviate your headache pain; improving neck/postural strength will keep the headache from returning in the future.

1. CHIN TUCKS: 3-5 sec Hold; 20-30 reps
2. CERVICAL ROTATION STRETCH: 20 sec Hold; 3x each side
3. UPPER TRAPEZIUS STRETCH: 20 sec Hold; 3x each side
4. SCAPULAR PINCHES: 3 sets of 10-20 reps

I've had chronic migraine and tension headache for 3 years now. Nothing seemed to work. No painkillers, no anti-depressants. I gave this a shot and honestly, I am shooked. It has helped relieve so much tension in my neck. I don't remember the last time i felt this relaxed. I'm gonna do these exercises everyday. I'm 18 and I start college next week and I thought i wouldn't have been able to perform as well given the headaches. But this has given me some hope. Maybe there's a way to be good again. Im 16yrs old and have horrible stress with school! I had a headache for 5 days and today it got worse. I used your exercises and it helped me so much, my lower skull felt like something was tugging it was alot of pressure and you relieved it so much thank you

I am so thankful for this video. I've spent the last few days doing a large amount of cleaning in preparation for guests. As a result I've been suffering from a extreme tension headache for about 10 hours. Nothing was helping. My guests will arrive tomorrow morning and I felt so disheartened that I wouldn't be able to sleep tonight or shake this headache resulting in a horrible day tomorrow. These exercises have cured my pain and I can finally get to sleep! Thank you so much!

Okay so I’ve had a horrible tension headache for 3 days ! It’s been waking me up out of my sleep, making me nauseous etc. You sir are a godsend! I just did all these exercises and the relief I got almost instantly….. I could cry! Thank you so much.

The muscle contractions can be a response to stress, depression, head injury, or anxiety. They may occur at any age, but are most common in adults and older teens. 👍

Excuse me, but I love you. My headache was unbearable, didn’t know what to do anymore. That thing with the pillowcase was it for me. That was the one little muscle that was really bugging me and I didn’t know how to stretch. A thousand times thank you.

Im literally about to cry from relief. For the past week I've been having this crazy migraine/neck pain and my appointment with neurologist is not till a week from now. I randomly click on this video and the results r pretty good. After the first time didn't completely healed me but definitely relieved the pain.

My Goodness it actually WORKS!! You are a gift from god. I thought I was a migraine suffer because I get headaches weekly and they stick around for two days, but I've followed your advice in here and it shifted it just like you said - in 5 mins, and that was without medication. I cannot thank you enough. I have been to the doctors for two years so many times in tears over headaches, had a brain scan - and NOT ONE doctor has ever mentioned it could be tension from posture.
