Drill: Faster Hips For Long Drives & Pure Irons

➜ Learn A Powerful, Effortless, Pain-Free Golf Swing:

If you want to hit long drives & pure irons you need to get your hips moving. I have been saying this since 1991. The problem is most average golfers started as adults. Adults will try to hit the ball sitting in front of them solely with their arms. In doing so, you never get faster hips because the hips don't turn. They simply end up just facing the ball when they hit the ball.

To get faster hips you need to be doing constant drills so you get used to the feeling. The more you repeat the movement, the better you get at it, the faster your hips. As the hips get faster you will start to hit long drives & pure irons.

So many people don't work on their swings enough to ever get this. This is why I want you doing this drill at home, at the range and even when you play. Just get addicted to it. The more you do it the faster your hips will start moving which result in long drives and pure irons because you will start to look like a pro as you swing. The more you look like a pro the more you hit it like a pro.

You hit the nail right on the head Paul. Hip rotation is what it's all about in the golf swing. Thanks for explaining it.

Paul Wilson has about the best golf instruction for amateurs and seniors in my opinion and I've tried lots. His program has hundreds of videos, all set out in a non technical and position feel orientated way, easily achievable and logically leading from one to the next.

How timely this video is for me, Paul. I just had a driver lesson. My “homework” is starting my turn much earlier than I had been. Basically as soon as I start coming down. I have been waiting too long to start the turn. Therefore, my hip rotation wasn’t very good. I also found that the more tired I get, the less hip rotation I have. Therefore, this causes me to chicken wing because there really isn’t enough room for my arms if I don’t have my hips turned. It was a real eye-opener. Now I have this phone drill I can do inside my house since it’s in the 90s and hot here. Thanks!

I have been following your videos for a while, all your tips have been really helpful. I can barely get a pure iron shot, now I can hit them clean and straight for most part (still working on consistency). Thank you again, it's been a real pain-free learning for me.

Paul that is the hardest thing to convince people to do to get accuracy and distance. It’s so simple to do if you can get them to do it

This is a fantastic tip especially since I just watched your tip on thinking about swinging around and around like a circle.

Hi Paul! On vacation at beginning of April this year I had some golf instruction that helped me begin to remove my arms from my swing and develop the beginning of an effortless swing. Your videos have been an enormous help in re-enforcing a swing driven from the legs and hips. Thank-you for all the great guidance! Recently I have started to pause at the top of my backswing (even seen some professionals doing this…) in order to get my legs/hips to fire first and drive my swing. When successful I feel my shoulders/arms/club lagging my lower body. This is a great feeling for me!

I did this move at the golf course today with the neutral grip and I was hitting shots into the middle of the fairway. Being an novice golfer the distance could've been better but the sound off the clubface was good. I'd say I'd have to turn my hips a bit faster and get used to the move to get that extra distance in the future.

I am enjoying your tips and watched your videos on the "effortless swing" and it has explained a lot of things that I have been doing wrong of late... You have an easy way of explaining things.. especially the "pivot on an axis" approach... I especially like the "Around and around" analogy as I have a bad habit of cocking my wrist too steeply on the backswing and then either slicing the ball or shanking it on the follow through! I have a sound technique but swing too fast and too much arms being tense and not enough hip rotation... and basically, as you say, "trying to hit the ball". I've started using your tip for the hip rotation at home as I am recovering from a pulled intercostal muscle (caused by not warming up and being too tense on my last golfing outing) so avoiding any club swing currently. Slow, relaxed, no arms, with loose wrists and hip rotation are the name of the game from now on!! Will be checking out more of your videos while I recover!! Keep up the good work!

Learnt golf as a 28 year old adult and it's a huge effort to switch your arms off but it's something im continuing to work a lot more on especially after recovering from golfers elbow.

Excellent drill. Just shoot the knee through the gap, "just PRIOR to change of direction" and you're 90% there. Keep the arms quiet and some trail side lateral bend still needed to not bury the club into the ground, but this drill forces you to open the hips. Getting the arms around the trail hip may take a little getting used to, but the lag is very nice when done right.

Really good drill Paul. I am struggling to get the proper hip rotation on impact. I know that I am losing lots of possible distance. When I watch all the big hitters at the driving range they all have fast hip rotation and at impact you can see both their butt cheek when stood beside them. This is key for me hitting the ball further and increasing the ball speed. With a driver my ball speed is only 142mph on average. My average carry is about 225 yards. I feel that with correct hip rotation and hip speed I can average a ball speed of 150mph. If I hit the ball in the sweet spot this should increase my average carry to about 235-240yards. I will practice this drill. Thanks.
