With more devices needing an internet connection, having a reliable home network is essential. In this series of videos, we look at the installation of a wired home network and how this can be used to improve wifi speed and connections to data-hungry games consoles and smart TV's.

Installing a wired data network in the home is straight forward and an ideal opportunity for electricians to add value to rewires and new home builds. We've found some of the latest kit to speed up installation - from RJ45 terminations through to discreet Wifi access points to boost wifi indoors and outside.

As ever, we love to receive feedback and suggestions for future videos.

'its lagging dad' -- finally i find someone who feels my pain

I’m hoping this covers more depth as the series grows! Looking forward to it. As an ex network engineer I often had to correct mistakes from some electrical contractors who didn’t know quite a lot of the basics. Things to consider: running network cable directly bundled on power cables (big no no), unless of course it’s appropriately shielded (the cat). It would be worth mentioning that introducing a switch like that becomes a bottle neck with many devices plugged into it. Ultimately that would restrict a theoretical max of 1Gbps between the 5 devices. Doesn’t seem to matter to most who think ah but I only have 30mbps internet. Soon it will become the norm for CAT6A or OM3 MM fibre. A client may have a NAS at their home and expect high file speed transfers across multiple devices, you’re already into CAT6A or fibre territory.

AT LAST someone BRITISH installing Ethernet and Cat 7! 98% is AMERICANS who have houses with PROPER CABLE TRUNKING! they know how to build houses whilst we in ‘quaint little UK’ ARE STILL building CRAP OVERPRICED ‘houses’ that look like they came from the 1950’s🤷🏼‍♂️😂😂😂 We are behind tech wise probably 20 years behind most European countries as well. In this day and age it should be a legal requirement to build new houses with ETHERNET built in AND PROPER air condition systems as in America. I know i was married to an American our house was 80 years old but it was more modern than many UK NEW builds🤔
BTW FORGET WIFI its old news so many people are poncing off the bandwidth NO CHANCE 😩
EXCELLENT liked and you have gained a viewer!😀

Lol Gaz you do crack me up "lagging" is a term used after a bunch of swear words from my brother 🙄 cheers for creating this networking system installation series. Thanks to Gordon for his amazing efforts in making the rig and explaining how we can improve our own network as well as what we can do for clients.

Electricians that incorrectly install networks keeps me busy. The quality of cabling is usually superb but they can lack the correct termination techniques and either configure the network incorrectly or sometimes just not at all. Installing networks and CCTV is far more than just running cables neatly and with a 20+ year IT background it really helps me with the more technical side of “mopping up” installations from the electricians. I love the videos on this channel by the way it’s really helping me learn what I call the other side of installing networks which is the cabling and the proper techniques that professional electricians use and also when to call in my own electrican to assist rather than try and be a jack of all trades

Guys, just catching up with the New channel. As someone who previously had responsibility for UK Broadband repair issues, this Video series can deliver a lot of goodness out there to help end user Customers. ISP's are heavily focused on the delivery speeds and flogging additional WiFi access points, but there is no substitute for a good quality fixed home Network. I know the Network/IT guys will be ragging the Sparkys and vice versa about who should do it, but if its done right, does it matter?
Keep up the good work 👍

Great and very informative video and a plug in REIN filter on your primary WAN connection to your router works wonders too (available for about £10)

When running new cable, always run 2x cables. If the main fails, you'll have a ready to go cable in place.

I've run flood wiring at 2 homes for the last 28 years WiFi is used ONLY for devices that do not have physical connection capability. Why run Wifi at 200Mbps max when with cat5e or cat6 you can run 10 times that.

PLUS connection problems are a breeze to resolve with cable since it's a five minute or less task to eliminate all the cables used on a link, including through the patch panel with just one test!
