Holy shit you just saved me so much headache in a brand new house! All of the cables were just going to a box and not connected to anything. Just connected everything to a switch and we were good to go!

I moved into a 2 year old house and was excited about the Ethernet and coax ports in each room. That turned to dismay when I found the patch panel in a closet with unfinished cables for both and no router or modem. I had to get internet so I went with AT&T wireless. Man, Ethernet would’ve been nice though.

My network box is in the basement of my house and my router and modem currently are on the first floor. If I move them to the basement would that weaken Wi-Fi signals especially if I’m on the second floor since the router is farther away?

QUESTION: I have wall Ethernet Jack which I intend to hardwire and connect my tv. However, when I go to my central hub where all the Ethernet cables/wires converge, I am not sure which of the cables/wires corresponds to the one I am trying to hard wire my tv with the wall outlet. Is there a way to find or identify the right corresponding cable so I can then plug that into a switch. There are just too many loose lines and I don’t know which is which. Btw, it is just loose wires, so I have to create an Ethernet tip/Jack to plug into a switch box. Thank you

Question: Our "internet hub" is located, typically, in a coat closet. However, the (cable) router and modem is located in one of the bedrooms, on the top shelf of a bookcase. Recently, we had a Spectrum tech here to deal with a drop in our wi-fi signal. I asked the tech if I could just run an ethernet cable from the router to the Ethernet port in the wall to "light up" all the ports in the house. He said, no...it would not work without some kind of adapter. Do you know what he was referring to and how to do this so I can have wired internet wherever I want it? Thanks!

Home Networking Question CAT5

I purchased a new Orbi Mesh system and looking to take advantage of my CAT5 network that was prewired in our house.

For context:
Going from Modem to Orbi Router. To CAT5 wall plug in home office. CAT5 setup is located in master bedroom. In this panel Im taking the CAT5 from the Office to the Netgear 108 switch. Im also plugging in the Orbi satellites to the CAT5 plugs in various locations in the house.

Im using all CAT6 cables to maximize internet. Plan is for 1.2mb.

When Im plugging into switch none of the lights are turning on. I did the terminating myself. But that was easy. My understanding is this should work. That the CAT5 is bidirectional so going from the office to the switch should be fine.
