How to get back in when your canoe flips!

Large and Heavier Canoes are hard to flip. This is a technique that's a bit easier to manage.

It's used if you find yourself far from shore and cant swim to it.

Since this canoe is about 16'6 long - the Capistrano Flip Method doesn't really work for me.

In this video I show how to empty a swamped canoe, flip it over, and then get in - all in deep water.

Best piece of advice I can give here is to practice the technique so you can stay calm and perform it if you ever need to!

If your looking for the Bailing Pouch I use, you can find it here:

No see, the first step for me is to panic. Because I have no idea how I ended up in a canoe in the water.

Water can always try to kill you unexpectedly. I hit a huge dead tree sideways in Rattlesnake Creek, right at the mouth where it enters the Clark Fork. It was my 1st time in a shallow kayak, and I planned a quick trial run, and the creek was shallow. I had trouble steering, realized I had little to no control, caught the fast part, got sideways,
& hit a huge snag, flipped & got pinned. I was a quick second thinking "well, this can't be right, it's shallow, and I'm pinned upside down under water." I got out, but my boat was sunk in the current & I was about to lose it forever. I cut up my fingers holding on to the boat, finally got hold of the rope, waded the 50 yards upstream to my house dragging the half-swamped kayak, put on some bandaids, took out an ad in the newspaper, & sold it. Goodbye, sweet little blue deathtrap.

Thank you for finally teaching THOSE whom couldn’t attend camp… water confidence is IMPORTANT!! It doesn’t matter what Loise Vutton says, what matter is that you’re breathing!

Thank you so much. I didn't think it was possible to get back in a canoe without pulling it to shore and starting over. That's great!

Very pragmatic and useful information as a kid I loved using my river boat. Thank you for helping other people be a bit safer in the water.

If you have another boat with you you can pull your canoe across theirs to dump it out. Rotate it as you lift out of the water to break the suction.

After living in an alligator infested state, watching him fall into water immediately made me fear for his life.

Coming from and over 40 year old these are good videos AND Evidence that you need to stay in real good physical shape. If I was to try and do this the boat would just flip the other way because I’m over 240 lbs, or I would never be able to get back in because I’ve lost too much strength over the years.
