Hystera in Greek means "uterus", and when women had mood swings during periods they used to call it "hysterical behaviour" hence the name hysterical from hystera

While it's true that anxiety was diagnosed as hysteria, that was just one of the symptoms on a very long list that included; chronic pain, irritability, both "excessive" _AND_ "low" Iibido, seizures, vomiting, paralysis, shortness of breath, fainting, convulsions, light/sound sensitivity, digestive issues, sleep disturbances, infertility, unconventional behaviour like disobeying your husband or questioning norms, tics, blurry vison, hallucinations—the list goes on.

So, well, nearly _anything_ could be diagnosed as hysteria.

The theories physicians came up with were absolutely bizarre as well, it would've been funny if it wasn't so messed up.
