Is the Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine Pro Worth the Hype?

By now, you have probably heard of UniFi or Ubiquiti. Their networking and security equipment has risen in popularity over the last several years.

In part one of our new series, we will show you how we switched to Ubiquiti and UniFi for a UDM, 16-port switch, and wireless access point (WAP).

We'll go through the initial setup and configuration.

UDM - Universal Device Management is what we want to achieve, and we replaced our Netgear Nighthawk router and AmpliFi HD mesh point to get there.

UniFi Dream Machine Pro (UDM-Pro) is an all-in-one enterprise network appliance. UDM-Pro integrates all current and upcoming UniFi applications with a security gateway, 10G SFP+ WAN, 8-port Gbps (non-POE) switch, and off-the-shelf 3.5" HDD support.

Something I don't think you mentioned is that the 8 Gigabit ports on the UDM-Pro only has a 1Gbps backplane, which might be an issue for some people.

Previously; I had a couple dumb switches. Now sporting 3 unifi ap and 16 port poe switch. POE powering 3 cameras, 3 APs and soon powering a tablet (for home assistant via poe > usb charger) and multiple vlans. Unifi controller running as a container that manages them all.

The APs supporting multiple SSIDs with vlans is great.

First! Congrats on your (2) new additional to your family. I have twins as well (girl/boy) and been a hell of a journey being a dad, but I would never change it for the world!!! Enjoy, take alot of videos and pictures because they grow up real fast. 😃
Second, I'm in the market to buy a UniFi POE switch. I already have a couple of UniFi UAP-AC-PRO. I decided to using either pfSense, OPNsense or maybe Sophos XG for my router/firewall needs. I will either use a raspberry Pi or unRaid docker for a Unifi controller. Good Luck with your Home-Lab. Once it's complete maybe you can give us a walkthrough.
