I purchased the USG yesterday, cancelled the order this morning and ordered the Dream Machine instead after watching this! This is literally what I was trying to piece together for my home network but instead it's all in one!

Check out the threat management section under the "new settings" there are a bunch of UDM only features that do not exist on the USG. (DNS filter, honey pot, endpoint scanning, dpi fingerprinting)

The nicest thing about this is getting one for your Parents. I can set them up with this, and add it to my UI account and login to their controller from home... without just exposing a Web Admin panel to the WAN. Ya I can''t just add it to my existing Controller... but this is still a good way to deal with Elderly peoples setups.

Finally pulled the trigger on one of these. Still gonna keep the 8 port managed unifi switch and AC Pro AP but will be moving the AP to another side of the house and running a cable. All in one controller, WAP, etc is nice as I plan to eventually downsize and remove the switch and just slap a POE adapter on the WAP.

The UniFi AP need to be plug in they can not be plug into an outlet and linked wirelessly?

The UnFi Dream Machine is a good start for new beginners.
Personal I miss the SNAT/DNAT and schedule time based based rules, it's not in GUI. Only WLAN SSID can be scheduled.
I prefeer to use Ubiquiti Edge Router both at home and at work and have installed Cloud Key on an vmware host.

can it pull a WAN-ip from a specific vlan?
whats it routing thruput? (LAN-WAN) i.e. will it be abl to pass the full 1gbit thru?
can it tunnel thru a specific vlan to a specific port for (typically) IPTV ?
