The Ubiquiti Unifi Dream Machine is an easy way to bring networking devices into homes and businesses. Ubiquiti UniFi(r) Dream Machine (UDM) offers easy, powerful networking all in a single unit, powered by a speedy quad-core processor running at 1.7GHz.

In addition to its Unifi networking app, Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine has a Web interface that allows configuration of your router. If you love to fiddle around with your home network, there is nothing that gives you more options for customization than this UDM. Through a web interface, you get access to not just the UDM, but other supported Ubiquiti products.

You can manage your network via the Unifi Network app, or use your web browser to access it. You can use the Network app to control both the UDR itself, as well as the other supporting networking equipment. With a Dream Router, you have access and run all applications from within UniFi.

The Dream Router comes equipped with a single port for the Unifi, which allows connecting to the Dream Router and logging in to it using just one application. It allows direct connection of cameras, phones, and other Internet-using devices. Dream Router is also running Linux under the hood, allowing potential unsupported mods.

Ubiquiti is a popular name in the small business sector, but they also sell various routers for home use. The UniFi Dream Router is one of the more capable routers that can be found for home users, partly due to it being a entry business-grade unit. If you are in a rush, cannot wait for the UniFi Dream Router to come out, and want a simple but capable device, plus price is not an issue, then consider buying a UniFi Dream machine, because it is still a great choice.

It is not the best UDM, this seems to be more of a step towards getting a glimpse of UniFi Dream for entry-level consumers browsing the shelves of Best Buy. The UDM is the first Unifi product to work just fine as a home router, thanks to its friendlier design.

The UDM, with its built-in UniFi Controller, is the easiest way to bring 802.11ac 4x4 WiFi to your home or business. Here, a UniFi network controller runs on a Dream Machine (UDM). UDR works out of the box with no problems with at least two PoE devices, either as power supply or, if using a Unifi Access Point, the Network Control Center.

Like with UDMs, UDRs can accommodate several UniFi access points (up to 15) or extenders, to form a mesh WiFi system. For instance, on the networking side, the new routers can handle up to 15 access points, whereas UDMs can manage up to 40. After that, like the UDM, the UDR has all the features that you could imagine when it comes to networking, WiFi, and mesh setup.

The existing UDM is also only able to run one application, the UniFi Network application, while the UDR can run them all, from UniFi Network, UniFi Protect, UniFi Access, UniFi Talk, and others, but the biggest caveat is that because it is low RAM, the UDR can only run two of them all at a time. The existing UDM can be managed separately, but you will want to stick with either UXG Pro or a third-party router. The UDM-SE, powered by UniFi OS, gives you complete control over all of your UniFi devices, including access points, security cameras, talking phones, and access readers.

Referenced in the diagram above is the wide range of UniFi OS apps* supported by the UDM-PRO. Ubiquiti Controller Software will typically list each UniFi device running in your network. With a normal Unifi ecosystem, you would need one access point, one switch, and one security gateway in order to get to Ubiquitis Network Controller.

I think it could have been a little better explained, but I also think I may not be the target audience for this video. Still I think I got what I needed out of it. I'm just a basic home user and I have a few unified access points and I figure I should probably get a router so I can do everything in the unifi app which is sort of what I want. Just an easy one step solution and it sounds to me like the router is the way to go. I only have two access points. There's no way I'm going to need ever more than three more on top of that. And that's if I get fabulously wealthy and just want to litter access points in every room in the house for no reason. Thanks for the info brother

Since you have both routers do you see any issues connecting both models via VPN? I have a UDM at my parents' apartment so there are a lot of devices and wifis in close proximity. I am also running a pihole as a container on the same UDM because it had extra processing power. I don't think I need another UDM at my current place since I live alone half a country away but I do plan to connect the two networks together for ease of management and be able to see both networks via the same Unifi UI. I am also thinking of getting a 1 or 2 G4s camera along with the UDR since I sometimes travel for a few weeks at a time and using motioneye on a pi4 is a PITA.

Short and informative. Nice work. I take it we are going to get another video of those two devices since you didn't open them yet!

Does anyone know if I can connect/link the Unifi Dream Router with any other Ubiquiti extender? Are there any requirements for this?

AFAIK the max transmit power is regulated by the FCC for each frequency band, the differences in the docs come mostly from different antenna designs and their efficiency ... e.g. you can not just buy a WiFi AP with 100 W transmit power to blast your whole neighborhood

Does router support firewall or it's without firewall. Datasheet doesn't specific IPS/IDS similar to machine 850Mbps max

Interesting, can it utilize 1Gbit internet and home network?

Note that the UDR has a max throughput of 700mbps while the UDM can do a full gig. I found this out the hard way :(

Hey Brad, how's it going? I promised I would give you an update after I moved and got settled, and then it's just been a while before finding one of your videos to comment on. Anyway I've been settled for the most part in a new apartment, and things are going well. I also wanted to mention that I have been able to fix my smart light disconnects by putting the bulbs on their own guest network with a different subnet. Turns out after doing some research and talking to a few people they were getting flooded off by all the traffic on the main network. Anyway, they have been nice and stable. Hope things are going well for you. Have a great day!

Did you say the word "security" and didn't cover it? May have missed it.

Thinking about migrating from google nest Wi-Fi to UDR.
- what’s a good ap to extend the UDR? I need to replace my google backhaul network.
- can my google pucks temporarily replace a unify ap?

is there a way, or documentaion on how to use the UDM in bridge mode just as an access point?, mine is about dying and acting really funky lately so I swapped it out, but would still like to atleast use the wifi as an AP

Can I use 50 Tplink routers (TL-WR840N) in the dream machine. Is a router like as access point to a dream machine?

Hi shiny tech, I'm looking for a reliable way to get low ping, latency, buffer bloat for pro/competitive gaming I've tried the ac86u and xr1000 with varying results. The ac86u qos is very laggy and the xr100 is more reliable in terms of lag management the qos is better I think but disconnects from the internet a lot and I have to reboot a lot. My setup right now is BT fibre 900 (1000gb down 100gb up) to xr1000 via cat7 to ps5 via ethernet cat7. We have anywhere from 3 to 15 devices on at any 1 time. Is a UDM the way to go or do I just give the UDR a try? any other suggestions?

I bought the dream machine a few years ago and when I set it up it was pretty slow, slower than my xfinity modem. Now fast forward to now and I'm in networking classes for CCNA and thinking about trying to play around with this and give it another shot.

I really wish Ubiquiti had better routers with higher cpus. While their offering are functional, no where near what you can do with

A mini pc running OPNsense is better 👍

Why didnt you mention the most important issue with the Dream Router? The fact that it cant even handle a throuput of 1gigabit on the WAN. Totaly useless router. They advertise 1gig port but cant handle the speed. It maxes out at around 600-700Mbit on the WAN.

I really want to get a dream router because I have access to a lot of unifi equipment from work... I just cannot seem to buy one unless I'm willing to pay a 200% markup.
