I’m sharing step-by-step instructions on how to make a classic red velvet cake! It is perfectly soft and moist and so easy to make. The cake batter can be made in 5 - 10 minutes! Enjoy it on any occasion, such as Mother’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Holidays, or just for you & your family as a special treat❤️

📌 Ingredients To Make Red Velvet Cake
(for 1 8-inch cake or 24 cupcakes)
Cake Batter
• All-purpose flour: 280 g (2 1/4 US cups)
• Baking soda: 1 tsp
• Baking powder: 1 tsp
• Salt: 1 tsp
• Cocoa powder: 13 g (2 Tbsp)
• Granulated sugar: 350 g (1 3/4 US cups)
• Egg: 100 g (2 eggs)
• Oil: 172 g (3/4 US cup)
• Milk: 120 g (1/2 US cup)
• White vinegar: 30 g (2 Tbsp)
• Vanilla extract: 10g (2 tsp)
• Gel paste red food coloring: 2 tsp * Adjust the amount as you like.
• Milk (hot): 240 g (1 US cup)
• Unsalted butter (melted): 56 g (1/2 US stick)

- 2 8-inch pans: Bake (Preheated) at 330ºF (165ºC) for 35 - 40 minutes until the top bounces back gently and a toothpick comes off clean with a few crumbs when inserting it into the middle.
- 12 Cupcakes (half batch): Bake (Preheated) at 330ºF (165ºC) for 15 - 20 minutes
* Adjust the baking time and temperature accordingly.
* Try not to open the oven door frequently while baking them.

Cream Cheese Frosting
• Butter: 225 g | 8 oz (2 US sticks) *Use 450 g (4 US sticks) of butter if you want a little bit stiffer frosting. I only used 2 sticks today.
• Powdered sugar: 500 g (4 US cups)
• Salt: 1/4 tsp
• Cream cheese: 450 g | 16 oz (2 US blocks)
• Vanilla extract: 1 - 2 tsp (Optional. I did not add it today.)

** For best results, measure ingredients with a scale. All recipes are designed with weighed ingredients using grams/ounces. Cup measurements are provided for your convenience. **

I made this for a birthday party this week and everyone LOVED it. It's the best and simplest red velvet recipe I've ever used. That hot milk and butter method really does the trick. Dear Aya, I made this for my daughter’s one year birthday. I was so scared the hot milk-butter mixture was going to scramble the eggs but I trusted you and followed the steps. It came really good for my very first layered cake and I am grateful for your clear instructions and your videos.

I think I have found the perfect RV cake recipe! I made one batch with gram measurements, and the other one with cup measurements, in the name of experimenting, and also because I got a new scale. The cake with gram measurements came out so soft, so moist and so decadent! I can't get enough of it. It was truly and simply amazing 🥰 The cup measurements cake came out soft, but not as soft as the first one, tiny bit dense, yet till taste so good! I have homemade buttermilk so I use that and only add 1/2 tbsp of vinegar. I will only bake my cake by scaling from now on 😊 I made some into cupcakes for the kids and the it was gone in 20 minutes 😂 Always trust your recipes! Thank you so much! 🎉

I just tried this recipe and the cake was amazing, it tastes good even as is without the frosting ! as usual I expect nothing less from your recipes it didn't however get red, maybe it's because I used liquid food coloring instead of gel, it came out looking beautifully chocolatty so that's still great, thank you aya for all of the effort you put into your recipes

I tried it with cupcakes, though mine were a bit oily and a bit too sweet for my test. But it’s not the recipe problem. My scale was haunted. But it was definitely very moist and tender. Even with my messed up scale it was really good.
I’m definitely trying it again using cup measurements this time. I’m excited!!!

Red velvet is my favorite cake. I'm from georgia, and I have been making this since I was a little girl in the 70s. I still enjoy making them at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Yours looks beautiful and I bet it is delicious Tim yum👩‍🍳😘🎂

I will definitely bake this, one thing that really appeals to me is that the butter is melted together with the milk! I don't do well with creaming method, but this oil based plus melted butter method, I just loveeee 😍 Made your banana & chocolate banana cake and it's a staple in my house, killer recipe! As a first time baker, this is pretty much easier. Made this cake last night, and oouch I can't get my hands off my fridge. It's super delicious. Ps: I used less sugar and oil.
