What is the baptism of the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit dwells within every Christian, comforting us and enabling us to grow in grace every day. From our 2022 National Conference, Derek Thomas explains what the baptism of the Holy Spirit is and what it is not.

The baptism of the Holy Spirit refers to the work of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer at the moment of their conversion. This means that the baptism of the Holy Spirit is not seen as a subsequent experience that is distinct from conversion but rather as an essential part of it. When a person puts their faith in Jesus Christ, they are immediately sealed by the Holy Spirit and baptized, …. as it were, into the body of Christ. John the Baptist spoke about the baptism of the Holy Spirit in Mark 1:8, saying:
(“I baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”)

A nother key passage that support this view is found in 1 Corinthians 12:13, which says, "For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit." This verse emphasizes that the baptism in the Holy Spirit is an essential part of our union with Christ and our membership in the body of believers.,

The baptism with the Holy Spirit is the sovereign monergistic work of salvation performed by God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is given from the Father to the Son (John 14:16, 15:26, Luke 11:13) and the Son pours out or gives the Holy Spirit in the Father’s name (Matthew 3:11-12, Mark 1:8, Luke 3:16, 24:49 John 1:31-33, 14:16, 14:26, 15:26, 16:7; Acts 1:4-5, 2:17-18, 10:44-48, 11:16, Titus 3:6). The Holy Spirit then regenerates or causes man to be born again (John 3:3-10, Titus 3:5, Ezekiel 36:25-27) through hearing the Word of God/Gospel (James 1:18, Ephesians 1:13, Romans 1:15-17, 10:17, 1 Corinthians 1:21) which gives spiritual life to the previously spiritually dead man (Ephesians 2:1-3, Colossians 2:13). God then grants man the ability to repent which is a gift (Acts 11:18, 2 Timothy 2:25) and put saving faith in Jesus Christ which is also a gift (Ephesians 2:8-9, Philippians 1:29, John 7:38-39). Man is then justified by grace through faith in Christ (Titus 3:7), receives and is indwelt by the Holy Spirit (Galatians 3:2, 3:14, Ephesians 1:13, 1 Corinthians 6:19), and the Holy Spirit spiritually unites/immerses man with Jesus Christ and puts the man into the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13, Romans 6:3-4). The baptism with the Holy Spirit is not water baptism and water baptism is not the baptism with the Holy Spirit for only Christ can baptize with the Holy Spirit and man can only baptize with water (Matthew 3:11-12, Mark 1:8, Luke 3:16, John 1:31-33, 3:8, 7:38-39, 14:15-17, 14:26, 15:26, 16:7; Acts 1:4-5, 2:17-18, 10:44-48, 11:16, 1 Corinthians 1:17). The baptism with the Holy Spirit is a one-time, instantaneous, and salvific work of God (1 Corinthians 12:13).

If it happens at conversion why did Paul ask the Ephesians if they received the holy spirit when they believed and they said no? And so, Paul laid hands on them and they received the holy spirit and spoke in tongues and prophesied!!

When man / women say "I THINK" that is when I question whom is speaking this, man or the HOLY SPIRIT, the flesh always deceives. Proving the Holy Spirit "which is CHRIST" whom lives within you, as you are not your own and it is he that lives, not yourself.
Do not be taken in with deception nor its desires, this is the mark of the beast, the flesh and its desires.
This is what happened with Adam and Eve, their desires to fulfill the needs of the flesh.
How does one know they are born again? If you have went through trials and temptation as Christ did after the Holy Spirit was upon him, seek the truth in Christ and you will not depend on the voice of man, but on Christ shall it be established.

I repented and was baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Three months later I was touched by God, He literally filled the entirety of the inside of my body. I could not breathe I could not move. I could see and tears were rolling down my face. This lasted 30-60 seconds?

There is no such thing as "baptism _of_ the Holy Spirit". Anyone who uses that terminology is playing fast and loose with Scripture. There is only a "baptism _in/with_ the Holy Spirit". This is something all believers share upon conversion (1 Corinthians 12:13) and is entirely different from being filled with the Spirit.
