Yes with trimming toenails! I do this before hiking and I’m glad someone finally said it out loud lol!

I've never heard of trying to hydrate beforehand but I think it makes a lot of sense, great advice all around mom.

More importantly:
1) Notify multiple people of your route and return date
2) Get a satellite phone if you won't have cell service
3) Consider carrying a weapon if you're traveling alone or will be very far from civilization

Great tip on the hydration. Also for blisters, I have used duct tape forever and it nips it in the bud every time. just rip off a square, cover it up, put your sock back on and you'll be happy

Love rule 1 and 3 but you should be hydrating all the time anyway. Also id like to add a 4th: always let someone know the route you plan to take and check in with them as you go so they know everything is ok

I drink a gallon the day before and never drink alcohol 2 days before but now I’ll try hydration 3 days before. I also trim my toes right before! I don’t typically get blisters though. This is great advice

Also double layers of wool socks. Even if you are going somewhere super hot.
Sound crazy but helps so much against blisters and sweat.
It can be super thin Marino wool mixed with other materials made to be running socks. The important part is just that there is two layers and it’s to a high degree made of wool.

You get blisters from friction. And those double layers of socks basically removes all friction, as the socks will just rub against eachother.

Also wool handles sweat a million times better then cotton, and the first layer is able to stay pretty dry by wicking away it to the second layer.

I regularly got the tip from other hikers and people who had done basic training in the army.

So for one hike I decided to pack two pairs and give it a go, and also one pair of my regular socks, and see if it worked out or not.
It was a hit summer hike. But I quickly became a convert. Worked wonders.
Haven’t had a blister while hiking since. I used to get them pretty regularly. I still change socks while hiking to make sure the feet get to breath and check that the feet aren’t getting wet. But the socks get a lot less wet now then they used to.

Also smelled pretty decent after long hikes, especially compared to say sports socks that are just made synthetic materials.

So true. The toenail thing is real! For a day trip I only hydrate the night before and morning of, but for a long trip I can totally see a longer period being needed. Don’t wait to hydrate until you’re on the trail ❤

Perfect timing because I am going on my first ever backpacking trip this weekend!

Too many people down cups of coffee before heading out on the trail - great recipe for heat exhaustion. Hydrating in the lead up to a hiking trip must include sipping on Gatorade or any good electrolyte replacement - not just water. Also should bring electrolyte powder with you

Most important is to be in shape relative to the distance planned and 2nd is to wear in your shoes so they are comfortable.

I’m going to add one more:
Don’t forget to wear sunscreen, and bring it with you. Reapply every 2/4 hours depending on brand.

When I lived in NYC I had to trim my toenails constantly because if I didn't my toes would be in horrible pain after walking all day 😭

Turning your socks inside out so the stitching doesn't cut into your toes

... Yes, #3, CHANGE SOCKS especially if you have "waterproof" Summer unnecessary lining that keeps the sweat and heat in for soft skin and BLISTERS! Some put on moleskin Before! Lots of athletes tape up feet before, like football players etc
