Not the same up north here in Canada. At least in Loblaw stores. Fridays are when our sales change, but there is no way to get double deals, unfortunately. Wednesdays are the worst up here, we get no stock of any kind.

Ive definitely noticed I buy less healthy later at night, but I tend to go later on so I can get end of day specials. I like to buy the bakery ciabata loaf at about 75% off because of that.
Makes a 4 dollar loaf of specialty bread as cheap or cheaper than the crappy no named brand sandwich loaf.

Though if you want to save money on food and get cheapee, higher quality products, make sure to buy your bread at bakeries, your meat at butchers, and your fruit and veg at fresh fruit grocers instead of supermarkets.
