I have an experience with Comfrey I would like to share. Comfrey usually grows wild in gardens around here. Some people consider them weeds and pull them out. I live in the country and my garden is a mix of both nursery bought and wild plants which I leave for the bees and other other beneficial creatures. A few years back, I had somehow injured my wrist. It did not heal over the following weeks so I went to the doctor and after checking to make sure it wasn't broken, he pretty much told me to rest it and use an anti - inflammatory. Months went by and although the anti - inflammatory did work for as long as I took it, the pain and weakness would just come back. It got so bad, I could not hold anything, not a pen, a cup, anything, without it falling out of my hand. One day a friend came to visit. He noticed I was not able to use my right hand. I told him my woes and he told me to wait a few minutes and went into my garden. He was back in a few minutes and put a pot of water to boil on the stove. He took a few leaves from his hand and dipped them into the hot water. He then took a clean cotton dish towel, folded it, dipped it into the hot water, wrung it out and placed a few leaves into the fold. He placed it on my wrist and told me to leave it there for about 10 minutes which I did. We chatted and I forgot about the fact I was holding onto this cloth around my wrist. By the time I thought about it, I realized the pain had disappeared! He told me that I should repeat the process every time I started to feel pain and to make sure I used the cloth as putting the leaves against bare skin could cause a reaction. I only had to do this 3 times and the pain and weakness went away completely. It's been 30 years and my wrist is perfect.

oregano is awesome for sore throats. You can use fresh or dry step it on hot water and gargle with it. It has phytonutrients (thymol and carvacrol), which fight infections such as staph. It's loaded with antioxidants that help prevent cell damage, and it's an excellent source of fiber, vitamin K, manganese, iron, vitamin E, tryptophan and calcium.

Thank you for mentioning possible allergic reactions. Chamomile teas are touted as calming. It's not very calming when your throat closes up. That happened to me twice in one night. Very scary. Doctor told me it's an accumulative effect and the next time could be life threatening. So thank you for warning people. :)

I taught my kids about herbs. When we lived in Sweden 1 hour away from a hospital my son cut his finger deep almost to the bone with a knife he was making in his blacksmith shop. He called me to get him to the hospital. In the mean time he went in the field got some yarrow. Chew it up and spit it out on his bleeding cut and wrapped it. When we got to the hospital the bleeding had stopped and the wound had closed up a great deal. We told the doc what we had done and the doc said impossible. It must had been a shallow cut because wounds don't close up like that. Well it did close up and thanks to me teaching him about herbs I believe it was a God send

I am basically retired, (I'll be 69 Nov.30th)....my last day being Dec.31, 2022. However, I am home until then recuperating from knee replacement until then. I am now getting excited to be able to enjoy baking, cooking, vegetable gardening, soap making, etc. I came across your website recently, learning about sour dough starters and baking. I love the abundance of information and classes I have found on your site. You are now my go to cooking site and I am sure I will be spending less money with all of your tips and my husband and family will eat much healthier now that I will have time. My mother is of Italian heritage, and my Dad Irish English, and we always had a vegetable garden growing up, and I learned to can vegetables with my mother and make our own sauce.I like to cook, bake, etc. but work has always gotten in the way. We normally have a large veggie garden, and I became interested in herbs, both culinary and medicinal many years ago. After marriage in "76" we moved to 6 acres in NW New Jersey, in "86"where we raised chickens, and other farm animals, and we all benefitted . My kid's grew up with them, and I was lucky to be a stay at home, homemaker for 12 years before working FT. The books that got me started with my interest in herbs was Rodales Illustraded Encyclopeadia of Herbs, and also, and Garden way, Joy of Gardening by Dick Raymond, and Garden Way's, Joy of Cooking with Janet Ballantyne which I still refer to when needed.
I am using my recuperation time, to plan my eat n store garden for next year, an want to have a culinary and medicinal garden. I am wondering if you have any tips for planning your herbal gardens. I'm sure many people would be interested:)

I’m grateful to have a long video that doesn’t oversimplify the complicated subject of medicinal herbs.

I prefer thorough information that acknowledges the complex nature of the topic and keeps encouraging research and caution. The fact that you are sharing what you actually do yourself is invaluable.

The short videos that makes medicine seem like a panacea, ignores our bodies are unique, and expects you to do what you are told without research are DANGEROUS.

Many people just make a list of random herbs and make it seem like they will help you with EVERYTHING without giving SPECIFIC information. At best THRY are passing on rumors and things they haven’t researched. At worst it’s click bait. Either way it’s clear they are uninformed. It’s hard finding someone who has done research. Some even say things that make it clear they have no first hand knowledge of the things they are saying YOU have to do.

If your videos were shorter they wouldn’t be as informative. Plus you’re entertaining. The passion you have for food and health is obvious. Your enthusiasm is contagious. Your thoughtful, rational approach is appreciated beyond words.

I can understand wanting simple easy advice, but I care more about having information that makes sense I can research further. The easier sounding advice is often illogical and even HARMFUL.

It’s like the grocery store that’s on my block. It seems convenient until I remember the problems I have finding FRESH produce thst isn’t more expensive than places like Whole Foods. Just because something is more readily assessable, doesn’t mean it’s a better option.

However for those that want simpler shorter videos, there are more of those kinds of videos than there are well thought out, in depth videos like these. Feel free to check them out, look for articles where you can go straight for the information, or use the time stamps to go straight to that info. Clicking on long videos, ignoring the 90% of short videos, not checking Mary’s website for more concise information, ignoring the time stamps and that you can go straight to the info, and acting like it’s BAD to tell you to exercise caution and consult with your doctor, doesn’t make sense. You’re ignoring all your resources to complain that you clicked onto a video that you can see is long BEFORE you clicked on it.

Plus complaining that someone is giving you the science behind MEDICINE and wants you to be careful, goes AGAINST your best interest.

Just because oversimplified half truths are the norm, doesn’t change the fact it’s up to us to use caution and critical thinking to find what’s best for us. Even the best health advice is not helpful to EVERYONE. Asking your doctor about treatments is just what someone who cares about themselves does. It also makes the fact that you clicked on a long video that makes up less than 10% of the videos on this topic, suspicious. It’s like you’re sabotaging yourself and blaming others.

Proactive people find information that’s delivered in the way that works best for THEM. They don’t go looking for videos that don’t suit them and complain when they can look for sources of information that’s easier for them to digest. Especially if they are serious about empowering themselves.

When they find a source of information that stick with it. They don’t complain that everyone else isn’t the same. VARIETY IS GOOD. CHOICES ARE GOOD.

I too dislike videos that spend half the time teasing itself or telling you why you should do something you’re already convinced about. I ignore them and use what I don’t like about them to be clearer on what I DO want. I’ve left comments but it’s for the exact OPPOSITE reason some complained about these videos. Not explaining why I NEED these herbs, what they are supposed to do, most don’t mention the science. Too many expect you throw caution to the wind and expect you to just do what you’re told by the video or article you happened to click on. However this is NOT one of those videos .

Ironically I almost never see complaints about those videos getting to the point sooner, even though the things they talk about are different from what the title says the video is about. Which I find weird. 🤪
