Olive oil goes rancid quite quickly usually 6 months unless you keep it cold and dark, usually the oil and rubs/salves use grapeseed, avocado or fractionated coconut oil vs olive oil. You can use just about any oil but how long will it last before going rancid depends on the oil used.

Ok, 2weeks is not enough time to extract everything out of the herb(s) being used. It takes a minimum of 6-8 weeks for maximum extraction of the herb(s) used. And you "ALWAYS" press the herb(s) you used, to get the remaining amount of oil out . Even if you have to use a fine mesh screen afterwards then do so. And even if you have some particulars of the herb(s) you used left in the oil, that's fine, It doesn't matter if there is still bits of herb(s) left in the oil.

Mary, fun fact, in French a double boiler is called "Mary's bath" (Bain Marie) in honor of a famous alchemist ( from Ancient Alexandria) !

After the birth of my daughter I did a sitz bath of calendula, comfrey, and lavender to make tea bags for the tub. It was HEAVENLY compared to the Epsom salt I used with my oldest 3.
Vitamin E or Rosemary Oleoresin Extract will help extend the shelf life of the oils (fats).

I have found that by using oregano olive oil and added to any salve can increase shelf life significantly.

If there is such a thing as comfort food, this is my comfort channel.... Glad I discovered it. I'm your new fan. Of course, I've subscribed and have the bell button. Now, backtracking your previous episodes... binging actually.

Mary, I’m so glad I found your amazing channel! I have been binging this weekend 😁. Several years ago our naturopath told me to combine my calendula oil with a goldenseal tincture and spray it on my son’s arm, where his scratching had infected his eczema. It worked like a charm and it’s my tried and true for healing any skin irritations now. Thank you for sharing so much in your videos and on your web site.

You can buy the nylon mesh coffee filters at any big box store, I like the V shaped ones as it aids in getting the liquid out. Plop the stuff into one of those, it's a very fine mesh, does NOT absorb any of the goodies, and you can then take a spoon and press the herbs to the side of it to wring out any remaining oils to recover them.

Goto a dollar store / salvation army etc, and get an old coffee maker for a few bucks, it comes with the strainer AND a basket to hold it in to make it even easier and cheaper for you.

Hi Mary, I use my yogurt maker for making my herbal oils. It runs right around 100 degrees, the perfect amount of heat.

Thanks so much for this valuable information. My grandmother had so much knowledge of these things and I failed to learn from her as a young girl. She also made delicious pies for me on birthdays and all I did was eat them lol. So, now here I am wishing I knew all that she knew and you are helping me to catch up.

I usually use grape seed oil because it lasts longer and is cheaper.

Coconut oil and avocado oil are excellent fruit oils, too! ❤️ but I agree with you on the nut oils.

I've seen the oven used as a double boiler, placing an oval roasting pan in the oven with about an inch of hot water, then add your jars of herbs and oil; oven on the lowest setting. I use my crockpot on low or warm with my jar of herbs and oil and a couple inches of water.

I think putting your herb oil mixture in a sealed container, in a dehydrator, is better than the oven method. The temp is well controlled and the timer will take the need for constantly checking away. Even if you forget about it until the next day, you will still have a good product. Thank you Mary for all your wonderful and informative videos. 🙂
