Thank you for sharing!! The biggest takeaway is the options that you have when you become a better financial steward. You get a say so and not tied to staying just for the income. Congrats on being in that place and I look forward to your next adventure!!!

I wouldn’t have told my supervisor and colleagues that I’m actively looking for a new position without having first secured a firm position…You seem like a really nice person and I would assume that your colleagues seem genuinely nice too for you to have shown your hand like that (I’ve worked with some horribly manipulative ppl in the past so I couldn’t imagine doing that & possibly putting a bullseye on my back). I would have simply voiced my concerns while quietly planning my exit. I would definitely recommend that to 99% of other workers out here not tell fellow employees that you don’t really know or your employer that you are job searching unless you’re using it as a strategy to gain a job promotion or salary increase

I’m a public school teacher in metro Detroit, when you said you were going to work in a school, I said a prayer for you. I headed my schools trauma response team it is a lot . The focus of admin and the mental health staff is triage and not really addressing the root causes, teach coping skills, identifying triggers etc. Teachers have 100+ students that they are responsible for, they often may not notice students struggling until they are in full dis regulation/ meltdown. When I watch your Vlog of your workday I knew that you had a really high standard and wanted to really help students and that’s very difficult to do in a school setting. You can’t really provide therapy, you’re basically doing therapeutic activities and sending students back into an environment with people who don’t fully understand how to support the students or have the skill set to do so. I knew you would be frustrated because of how organized you are. Public schools sadly are often chaotic unless you’re in an affluent district. I would also add that you started during a really turbulent time i.e. post Covid and you started in second semester so you didn’t get the opportunity to set the tone for how your year would go. There’s certainly a difference when you start at the beginning of the school year and mid year. I love that you are clear on your boundaries and doing what’s best for you. That is something that I struggle with, but I did resign from a school this year because I was experiencing racial intimidation.

I've been in the school system 10 years as a teacher, substitute, and school counselor. The confusion is everywhere, and it all boils down to the leadership. You come across very authentic and professional. Where ever you land, they will be blessed by your presence.

Immediately needed to see this! So many of my friends are in education and what they thought was a dream job ended up not being so. My friend just quit her dream job in a school as a psychologist after just a couple years. Thanks for the update!

I was a teacher for years, and I come from a family with lots of educators. I didn't work in K-12 in large part because I saw how broken that system was. We do not put the funding and energy we should in to our public school system, and it chases off excellent employees and leaves many of your youth with a mediocre education. I hope your next job is a better fit.

I love your approach of "I learned something" versus "I regret y and z."You're so passionate about the kids. It's a pity the system has failed you and the children with all the barriers in place. Whatever happens, I hope you find something in alignment with your values 🙏🏽

I held my tongue when you first said your new employment is within a school system.
15 yr educator. Former teacher now.
You were diplomatic in your critique.

Education works at best if at all for the least disruptive average to slightly above avg student with run of mill problems if not minimal issues.
I did appreciate the autonomy. My first non system experience with hands on to micro management styles was enough for me to say I’m going to be an entrepreneur.
Hopefully your next transition step is more akin to what you ultimately want to do with your training and skills.

This is just the school system. I just finished my first year as a school social worker and I’m lucky enough to be in one building and i had the same experience. Once you get set up with my some basic they let you do your job but it’s hard when you don’t know what they want to see. I didn’t even have anyone to shadow. So i just created what i wanted to do and what i felt would be helpful and just did it and gave them update along the way

School psychologist here. Sounds like a regular thing that happens within schools for many mental health and human services professionals. Can be very different from other settings and often you are forced to live in the “grey” which is very uncomfortable and often leads to weird ethical situations. Even had an admin state that they saw no need for us to have a supervisor that understood our role/ethical mandates which eventually led to a legal issue after a while that could have been prevented with a clinical supervisor on staff. I would say though occasionally you can find a more pleasing situation when school districts are changed (sometimes….). This could be why there is a mass exodus of these professionals from schools right now and thus creating shortages in schools. Good luck on your path!

I worked as an educational audiologist for two years and recently left that position due to the exact same experience. My poor little OCD heart just couldn't handle living in the grey. I affectionately call it the "wild wild, west"- I learned I need structure and a team so being the ONLY audiologist was not a good fit for me.

Love your videos Shay. I am a school social worker, I just did 4 years in Chicago public schools. Taking a step to a smaller suburb with more resources this year. I feel like elementary is easier because the kiddos typically have one main teacher to collaborate with and you see so much growth (but more initials/IEP paperwork). Good luck on your SW journey, so many wonderful opportunities out there!

My School Social Work job was a nightmare. I did not get any training, there was no one to shadow and they did not have written policies and procedures. I felt like they needed an experienced School Social Worker. It seemed like everybody was winging it.

Hi Shay, Continue to make this a matter of prayer. I worked a job that often tested my resolve to maintain my conviction to my values. Unfortunately, I initially allowed my concern for my material needs lead my decisions. In the end, I survived with my values in tact but I struggled until I actually put my mental health first. I suggest you remain true to your values and let your conscious be your guide. I pray and hope that you have peace with the choices you make.

Being new to the spd world and meltdowns, and the type of support in various settings a child needs without their parent…listening to you speak just warms my heart for the children you have supported. I hope when my son enters school has someone as genuinely passionate as you to support him throughout his academic journey.💙

Schools don't have the funding that your other places may have. A lot of times you are flying solo, but it's okay. We depend on social workers that are willing to work with troubled students and by pass certain things. Teachers remain because it's about the individuals that are there that you can have a tremendous impact in their lives even though there's a lot of crazyness and things you know that are wrong, but keep at it, because you are there for the kiddos.

Working 10 years in high schools as a Clinician. Everything you said is so true 100%. I quit finally December 2021. Best decisions ever! Good luck!

I think that is so healthy of a way to look at things. When I was working in an office, I felt the need to leave so many times and I should have followed through with it after the first couple red flags, but I didn't. But like you said....it's a learning experience. Best of luck!

I’m new to your channel. After tuning in, I am subscribing. I’ve spent 16 years in the traditional school system, and it was very interesting to say the least. The students were great to work with, they were never the problem. I done well financially, but working in such an atmosphere can stunt your growth. Congrats to you for keeping your options open. I stayed too long. However, when we don’t move and change at appropriate times, the Lord steps in and make those changes for us.

Now I’m happy. I work in a educational system, but the students who come to see me do so because they want to, not because they’re mandated to do so. I’m not asked to “duty” or do things that are not Social Work related. There were parts of Social Work I didn’t know existed, and I’ve been Blessed to engage in some of those areas. I can’t wait to see your next steps!
