What is Quiet Quitting? & Why Are So Many of Us Doing It?

There is a new phenomenon called 'Quiet Quitting' that is sweeping through the workplace.

Basically, workers don't actually quit their jobs, instead they stay on and do the bare minimum required to keep from getting fired. They are there physically but mentally they have checked out. They have quietly quit and no one knows.
Are you going to join Phase 2 of the Great Resignation?

I think "quiet quitting" is healthy, arrive on time, leave on time, do your job when you're there and leave work at work. Nothing less, nothing more.

I went to my job orientation. They said that there will be mandatory 7 day 12 hour shifts for only $14.25 hour. As soon as I heard that, I got up and walked out. I never went back.

I am 42 years old.

In my 20's-mid 30, I busted my ass trying to get promotions and move up in companies and work sites, it never paid off. Someones friend always got the promotion, someones brother always got hired onto the new position, or just a "likable guy" got it above me.

I stopped, I now show up, do my job good enough, and I go home. I don't accept over time, I don't ask for extra duties and if they are tossed at me, I don't do them, or I do them half assed.

I work to live, I do not live to work.

I just decided to quiet quit. I've stressed myself out over this job, wrecked my emotional health, and become a borderline alcoholic. This downward spiral must end.

This idea of quiet quitting reminds me of the movie Office Space where Peter doesn’t quit, he just stops caring. Stops caring so much that he actually gets more respect from the big bosses and gets promoted! 😂

This is what happens when companies don't value their employees. Loyalty goes both ways.

My mom worked for 25 years for the Diocese and was set to retire. October 2020 she was fired alongside many others of retirement age. 6 months before she would have been eligible for full benefits. I saw this and realized I will never do anything for any company because I'm not guaranteed a safe future

in my working experience iv found that the only reward for doing good or fast work is just more work

These companies don't care if you collapse at your desk from working yourself to death. Why would I kill myself for a job that couldn't careless about me?

I had a massive heart attack last may and that was enough to make me “quiet quit”. No more 60 hours a week, no more weekend, they get the 40 hours they pay me for and not a minute more. Best career change I have ever made.

I love how employees are taking back the power, and realizing they don’t have to kowtow to some corporation. I think quiet quitting is a really smart way to continue receiving income, without letting your job beat you down and consume you. I agree that people were starting to realize this even before the pandemic, but that definitely validated the movement.

It’s crazy how fierce my resilience is because I’ve mentally checked out of my job, yet I still held onto responsibility and did a freaking wonderful job. I FINALLY submitted my resignation letter because my hard work is finally paying off from searching for a job for 4 whole months, aggressively.

This is why companies need to have a structure that rewards high performance with promotions, raises, and bonuses. Many companies say you can "grow with the company" but the only "growth" you see is a growth in responsibilities for the same pay.

"Quiet Quitting" is a desperate attempt of good, decent individuals to manage existential overwhelm

It is interesting, that doing what is required for your job, is now considered "quiet quiting" it is crazy that companies expect you to treat your job and their company like it is your "mission" or "higher calling" like you have an almost patriotic duty to sacrifice for its success. They aren't a calling, they sell copiers or whatever. If companies stopped trying to sell hustle culture and focused on keeping good employees and not on hiring "rockstars" I think everyone would be better off.

I’m doing this right now. I got passed over for a promotion and burned myself out. I was working overtime, busted my butt, and was doing the job of someone who makes $8 more than me on top of doing my job. When I got passed over, it felt like an insane slap in the face because management literally were dangling the promotion over me for months. They were like, “We need you to be like this for the job.” And I would change how I did things and worked as hard as I could. So now 60% of my day is me watching YouTube videos at my desk.

On top of that, I had to train the new person who got the promotion and my supervisor told the new person to be just like me because I’m a perfect employee.

Update: So I’m not at that job anymore. But my manager DID let me know why I didn’t get the job. Basically, management knew I could do the job, I interviewed very well. But my resume wasn’t “competitive” because I have a lot of retail and food industry jobs. Oh, and they already knew who they were going to hire before posting the job and just interviewed me as a courtesy.

I'm currently quiet quitting at my current job, been doing it for a few months. My manager (who is actually a nice dude) makes it hard though, he's always talking about setting goals and career advancement. I could care less about having a career, I just want to do my job and go home. This idea that we always need to be striving for the next promotion is toxic, let me just coast in peace. I do good work but I'm not overextending myself for NOBODY.

I think quiet quitting will stop you from having a stroke, heart attack, high blood pressure which will lead to the prior two. I think quiet quitting will lessen your depression and give you better peace of mind. I think quiet quitting will actually improve the quality of your life. very few people can quit their job but with the current reality of gaps of people being gone at our jobs and the workload being astronomical, quiet quitting is the best solution. No job is worth your life but who has the alternative option of quitting so quiet quitting is the next best option.

I have struggled in the past to accept this concept at work, believing that in the long-run, a company will reward you for being so motivated and high-performing. I have yet to find a company that does that and now I see the benefits of quietly quitting. A common quote I hear often is "the work will still be there when you get back" ... and it most definitely is. Whether I work fast or slow, stressed or calm, I'll be getting paid the same.

Majority of companies just see their employee's as a number. Attempting to work hard and go above beyond rarely gets you anymore recognition. They will just expect more out of you for no extra pay.
