How to Make Super Soft Charcoal Burger Buns | Yudane Method | Halloween Recipe

Activated charcoal is a flavourless ingredient that can be used to turn various foods black for aesthetic purposes. It being Halloween I decided to make some spooky burger buns. Of course, activated charcoal was not designed as a food colouring. It is commonly used for medical purposes to alleviate food poisoning or in the treatment of drug overdoses. It is perfectly safe to consume and will not have any effect on most people.

If you are on certain types of medication, then you should consult a doctor about it because activated charcoal may prevent some medication from being absorbed by the stomach. Right, medical warnings out the way, let’s get on with the burger buns. I chose the yudane method because my original yudane burger buns worked so well in the past. It is my go-to burger bun recipe.

The yudane makes the buns extra soft and light and that just adds to the weirdness of this recipe. Looking at a solid black piece of bread you would not think it would be very soft or light, but when you bite into it, it totally surprises you.

I would have never guessed how happy being called a "spooky baker" would make me before watching this

Spooky buns. One of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. I’ve used charcoal for just about everything but this. I’m trying to scrounge up materials for a nice charcoal kiln. This serves to reenforce the notion that a baking option should be part of it. Bake bread while making charcoal, then use the charcoal to make more bread. You could even turn the stale bread into charcoal.

This was a fun project - I baked a double batch of buns so I could use them for both the included burger recipe (to be baked tomorrow) and for my "Spooky and Ghoulish Bahamian Crispy Prawn Burgers" (of which I already had thawed shrimp). Photos have been posted on "Charlie's Baking Buddies."

That burger recipe is what I use for Salisbury steak. Just smother it in brown gravy and there you have it!
I can vouch for the bun recipe. it's my standard recipe for sandwich rolls ever since I found it on this channel. Make them or twice once a week.

I made the bread today. I double the recipe and made a braided bread instead of buns. It is the softest bread I have made. I made the Yudane double also. I did the slap fold like you did on the video. Very please with out come. Going to try the charcoal and Yudane on my next rye bake. Thanks Harold Smith

Activated charcoal is good for tummy troubles, even the tiniest amount works. I'd take it for general troubles like headache...good detox. Excellent when your pet is feeling unwell. Very safe.

Those look awesome. I love baking burgers. It's handy if you're multitasking and can't babysit them on a grill or in a pan. :)

Yudane rocks!
It definitely works. Tried to use it to make some bread two days ago and it came out delicious. Soft, but springy, perfect texture inside and thin crust outside.

I imagine you handout black breadsticks instead of candy when people come to your door on Halloween

Makes me hungry... They look awesome but, sadly, I'm watching this on 10/26 and don't have time to get the charcoal powder in time for my Halloween party. Maybe next year... BTW I've made your yudane buns recently with great success!

Okay - just made a burger "vanish like a ghost"!! I prepped the burgers last night and broiled one for an early lunch - it "disappeared"!! It was delicious, the flavors, textures of the various layers with the ever-so-soft yudane bun! Photos have been posted in "Charlie's Baking Buddies".

The combination of stale bread and water (usually Milk ) is called a Panade.
