When looking at Navies, it is neither the number of sailors nor the number of hulls. It's tonnage. Which is why China has more ships but the U.S. doubles them in tonnage and capability.

Even assuming their military is completely equal to ours, no full-scale war would break out between us. Trying to wage such a massive war between two nations projected to be roughly equivalent a whole ocean away is a logistical nightmare that neither country really wants to deal with.

A lot of these figures are just wrong. Like when they talk about how nearly 30% of Chinas aircraft are fighters, while the USA only 14%. What they dont say is that the US has more than 4 x as many aircraft as russia and china combined. Also, China might have more boats than the US Navy but the US navy still has 2 x the gross tonnage as china. so China can have all the little tiny dinky speed boats they want, US has 11 airplane carries that each house about 90+ aircraft and also another 9 helicopter carries. Any one of which could easily decimate chinas coastal defenses, or their power grid or whatever other target we choose to go after. There are many other fabrications too. Also, most of Chinas stuff dont even work. and their soldiers are 90% weak and ineffective. They will run hide and possibly even shoot themselves to not fight USA.

No matter how big they are, they would suffer against most individual NATO countries (assuming nukes weren't involved), as they have basically zero experience in any sort of combat, let alone the technologically complex modern battlefield where Western countries have been training, honing skills, and putting to work effective strategies and doctrine for decades. Chinese peacekeepers, out numbering and out gunning rebels in South Sudan, ran away when attacked. Western forces had to come to their aid and fight off the attackers. China is like that rich guy on the block who doesn't know anything about pickup trucks, but goes out and buys the most expensive, feature packed one he can find, and has no idea how to put any of it to proper use, because he's never done it before. That's the Chinese military right now. How you want to "rank" that is up to you.

The three years of the Korean War in 1950 and the eight years of the Vietnam War in 1967 were actually wars fought between the Chinese People's Liberation Army and the US military. Before the war, Americans were also full of confidence, but in the end, they both lost miserably, which is why Mao Zedong famously said that the United States is a paper tiger.

They certainly stand more of a chance than they ever have! WW2 taught a valuable lesson in an industrial age: you may have the latest technology, but being able to produce more armaments, have more personnel & be willing to sacrifice more of both - will probably see you win.
