Currently reading a book called ACT on life, not on anger, and I believe this is the crux of the issue for people with “anger problems”
Everyone gets angry, but we’re only judged on the behavior we exhibit while in anger

Can confirm it's so hard to recognize when you're being emotionally manipulated because it's usually a situation where everyone is stressed, so you think your hard times are just as much as the other person's.

Children of abusive/neglectful caretakers have very bad understanding of our emotions. We cannot heal our emotions before we acknowledge the abuse, and that sucks.

❤️ Sit with your emotions. Don't turn on the radio, don't open up an app and start scrolling.

Give whatever negative emotions you feel the proper attention they need.

If a song comes on that reminds you of a negative experience, or a loss, just leave it on... Feel into that feeling, but don't act on it.

If you have an argument or someone makes you angry, don't walk away and start doing something else, walk away and think about why they made you so mad.

Mom tries to play these games to this day. Learning to step out of that state and stay in control made me a lot happier and freed up headspace.

Personal Boundaries. Personal Boundaries are so important here. You can learn how to manage your own emotions and then get mixed up with toxic people who will blame you for being selfish when you say no. If you tolerate it, you become emotionally reactive and prone to manipulation yourself. Stay far away from people who can't accept "no" for an answer.

This is true for the good emotions as well as the bad. If you're dependent on others for your joy and happiness then they will maintain control over you.

Learning about having an internal locus of control in therapy was fucking life changing for me.

There is a pathway that happens - Thinking, feeling, behaving. We think a thought, experience an emotion, and engage in a behavior. The thing that is so difficult, is that sometimes the thought is moving so fast, and we are so accustomed to the thought, that it becomes almost invisible to us. So all we recognize is that we feel a certain way...and then react to how we feel. We can short circuit this process by building in a pause before we allow ourselves a behavioral reaction. As soon as we recognize the emotional response - which we will likely identify at first as a sensation in the body - take three deep breaths and ask yourself "what just happened?" and "what thought did I just think?" and "why this emotion?"

Over time, with practice - we can create a new pattern of behavior that is less reactive.

It seems like a common misconception that an emotion and the behavior it causes are the same thing, when they're really not.

This is so true. It's not possible for me to control my emotions but everytime i control my actions in response to my emotional state it sure feels nice

With PTSD this is very hard, but with a lot of practice you can start to recognize the patterns with your emotions and redirect the reaction to healthier ones.

Ah. So don't let them control you by reacting, let them control you by making you numb to what they're doing 😂

I've been going to therapy for over 20 years and I've gotten more help from Dr. K's videos than any of that

Utterly brilliant stuff - quantifying the why and how in relation to something that feels so nebulous and hard to understand.
