How Long Does it ACTUALLY Take to Learn Piano?? [ANSWERED]

How long does it REALLY take to learn piano?

I get this question ALL the time from students. And I used to ask it myself. Unfortunately, most teachers just give the answer "it depends".

Now... is that true? Yes, it does depend. But just because that answer is RIGHT doesn't mean that answer is HELPFUL. I'd rather give an answer that actually means something and can give new students at least an idea on how long it takes based on how much you practice.

To do this, in the video we're going to break down piano into three categories:

1. Technique
2. Playing by Ear
3. Learning Songs

For each of these categories, we're going to break it down into an "if X then Y in Z time". For example, "If you practice X minutes a day, you will get to Y level in Z months".

This way you can really see "ok, if I just practice a certain amount of time a day in a certain way, I can be confident I'll be at a certain level.

It takes the "it depends" answer and really breaks it down to something meaningful that you can actually follow.

"At 20 minutes a day it'll take about a year"
"At 40 minutes a day it'll take about 6 months."
You're welcome.

I love how he talks about piano like a personal trainer talking about exercise hahah I feel like he's about to say "JUST DO IT" at some point of the video

I come from a very strict Asian family and after a couple months from starting piano, the music my piano teacher gave me was starting to become difficult so I would spend hours playing the whole song over and over again because my parents would get angry at me if I haven’t “passed” the song that week, which killed the fun out of it. I thought I was just bad at piano but this video made me realize that I should try piano again but with a different game plan. Thank you

When I first started playing at 8yrs old, I literally had to be torn away from the piano.
The secret is practice and as much as you can. Listen to many types of music as well, and it will come to you. Then the "magic" happens. Being able to "improvise" on the spot. Feeling and hearing the music before it even reaches your fingers. It's an exhilarating feeling.
Listening to music is wonderful. Being able to play it, and create it, is divine.
Practice practice practice - is the answer ;-)

Have a blast!

I actually dedicate 30 mins - to an hour a day learning piano, then I jump into guitar 30 mins. I am 42 and I am learning both instruments. I am recording my practices and I noticed than in less than a month I am playing the song "I am a child of God" and in guitar almost done with "Jesu's the love of men". I rarely miss my practices.

I've been playing for upwards of 12 years now. I am intermediate-advanced and compose my own music. Practice every day at least 45 mins. Do subdivision, hands separately, etc. Push yourself to try at harder pieces.

It literally took me about 3 years before I am a little bit comfortable with sitting on the piano chair and touch the keys while people are watching me without me feeling too nervous 😬

Just started piano literally 2 days ago, I’m really motivated to learn but I wish I started way earlier since I’m 18 and missed a big portion of the fun in playing piano

Hello I am a beginner, I have been playing for 4 months but not systematically, A few exercises from your lessons for beginners allowed me to coordinate 2 hands at the same time and yesterday I learned J.S Bach-Prelude in one hour. Maybe it is easy but for me it is a big step. The point is, now I don't have to remember that much, I just understand how to play it, so now I'm learning fast. Thank you so much Zach, your lessons are very helpful.

Lol. I met all these qualifications after 3 months of teaching _myself_ to play piano. I'm going on 8 months now, and have surpassed what you defined for now. Yet I still consider myself an upper beginner or low intermediate pianist... There's so much more with piano.

Now I'm teaching my siblings, and it's obvious that those who do deliberate practice make amazing gains, every week, while those who don't, inch forwards.

I'm looking forward to help from this. You sound very convincing. I am 54. Starting again. I'm excited. I purchased a new keyboard today. Here we go :)
