'Not valued as a person, only as a resource' truth for our modern age.

Managers are always shocked, shocked! when people have standards for how they’ll be treated

This can be such a generational issue also. My mother, a member of the silent generation, believes you should work until you drop. I am Jones generation a.k.a. a late boomer, and often feel very guilty for not working until I drop, but learned the hard way that work-life balance is critical to my health and the health of my family. I had staff who were obviously younger, who clearly understood and demanded work-life balance and these folks are now becoming managers. I am glad to see having a healthy lifestyle becoming more the norm.

Very glad for her happy ending! The company did not care about her at all. Her manager was horrendous.

Good for her. I was refused leave for my grandmothers funeral. I should have just gone. That manager was extremely toxic.

The only way Alice could have stayed is if HR rejected her resignation stating they are firing her Boss Daniel over this incident and would like to keep her on in his absence. Removing the problematic supervisor can be a solution to avoid one person quitting snowballing into losing an entire team/department.

It's situations like these that reaffirm for me that I'm so fortunate to have the manager that I have. I think the company is as good, but I know occasionally some managers at our office do go on power trups.

One of my best friends was killed in September. The morning after I found out, I was a wreck. I emailed my boss and asked to take the day off as I knew I wouldn't be able to focus between cries and communicating with other friends. She was so understanding and had no problem of my needing time off for the funeral.

2 months later, she was just as understanding when I needed time off as my dad was dying.

If you don't have this in your job and if it's an option for you to go elsewhere, go where you're treated as a valued human being.

🧐🤔😳 "You can't tell me I can't go. You can tell me I can't come back, but you can't tell me I can't go."
🤣😘😎

The response that she received says a lot. It was like a big FU. She definitely made the right choice getting away from that person.

My sister is in a similar position. Her office is run like a prison and she's been dragged into the office for being too bubbly. And by bubbly I mean asking people near her if they want a coffee and laughing when they make a silly comment. The manager pops her head out of her office and goes "you're here to work not to gossip". My sister starts a new job in a couple of weeks but hasn't told them yet. She'll give them a weeks notice unless they have a go at her again in which case she'll quit on the spot. She's now walking round the office with a "I don't give a crap" attitude.

People usually don't quit companies. They quit managers

It's fantastic she found happiness! Poor management shouldn't dictate her worth or future.

I sent my resignation yesterday. The company didn't reply at all. I just received the notification from the work app that I was no longer scheduled. Talking about not being valued as a person.

I have had a few managers like that. One thought he could fire me over family medical leave (illegal to do that in the USA). Another tried to cancel my Christmas time off and also refused to approve time off when my mother died.
I nearly forgot about Sept. 11th, 2001. The whole world was in shock and my manager told us to suck it up and keep working. Someone higher up understood what was going on and told everyone to go home.

I’m genuinely furious at even hearing the company response.

i had to run from work to my grandmothers funeral and then immediately back to work. i lived with her and cared for her for two decades.
i knew i would quit, that day the decision was made.
