The myth is that when you sneeze your heart adjusts/misses a beat.It is still possible, depending on who you talk to, sneezing can still stress out the bod. "God bless you" came about from these myths. The story totally ignored that point.

It's nonsensical to say. Societal expectations are followed in response to peer pressure and fear of alienation or ridicule for not following standard cues.

It's totally meaningless and when sneezer doesn't say thank you back, it's super awkward and you feel useless

Saying God bless you is from the pagans. They believed demons would come out of you when you sneezed. And your heart does stop for a second when you sneeze.
