One thing I would add is to make sure to give everything a static ip for the cameras and the nas to make sure the dhcp leases don’t expire and change messing up everything. Also I would put it on a separate subnet to insure that you are not slowing down anything on the network and then you can configure a network adapter to connect to that ip through the tunnel so that one it’s secure for guests on your network and two to keep the speed up and have it isolated from your work.

I have been using Blue Iris for many years now - simple to use, license for 64 cameras is around £40 or $50. Will run on windows machines (so you can create your own redundancy via this) and it supports many different camera brands (including the £20 eBay 720p ones).

Support is excellent and I currently run 3 CCTV systems on this software.

One on a VM on my server (so plenty of RAM abd CPU)

One on an old EX490 machine

And one on an old eBay purchased dell (only cost around £100)

I know I'm late, but I love the taped post-it notes on switch to ID where each line goes!
I wish more customers would do at least this, if not proper labels...

YI cameras are the plug and play solution in my opinion.

This is an interesting post and it is great to know that NAS systems could be an alternative to dedicated NVR systems. What I really do not like is to pay licenses permanently, so the two free cams per systems is a good side use for these NAS, but that is.

What if the Synology NAS is it in a totally different place so is it also in a different network? How the setup should be done?

Does Synology have an iOS App as well? What about remote access from outside the local network?

How do you set it such that the old footages delete themselves to accommodate new footages?

How about if the IP cam did not show on both options? It shows "no cameras were found."

I definitely can recommend the Synology Surveillance. Found it was the best of options I investigated for a baby camera and been using it since. Note you can buy individual license codes online which is how I've gotten my additional camera beyond the free ones.

What is the best strategy between a) connect my camera directly to the internet box or b) connect to my synology nas ?

Does this also work if the NAS and cameras are in different locations?

Nice video! If the limit is 2 cameras per NAS, does it mean I can have 6 cameras on my 3 NASes?
