DEALER FEES You Shouldn't Pay in 2024 The Homework Guy

DEALER FFES on retail price cars are junk! Retail car prices already significantly HIGHER than PRIVATE PARTY PRICES! WHY? Because they do paperwork for you, register your vehicle, detail and clean it. So, WHY should you also pay them a DOCUMENT FEE or a PREP FEE when you're already paying for it? It's totally ridiculous!

The Homework Guy Team publishes videos to help Car Buyers. Then we added Cash Buyer Negotiations, and Held Hostage at a Car Dealership, No Haggle One Price Car Dealerships, How Much do Used Car Dealers Pay for Cars?, and Costco Auto Program. We hit all the topics!

A CAR DEALER WANTS TO:
1. SELL every car for the Highest Possible Price.
2. CONVINCE Buyers to use Dealer affiliated Lenders / Banks.
3. LOAD every Car Deal full of Fees and Finance Products.
4. OFFER Lowball numbers on every Trade Vehicle.

THE HOMEWORK GUY TEAM (THG) HELPS CAR BUYERS TO:
1. BUY a Car from Dealers or Private Party Sellers at the Lowest Price.
2. PAY Cash or Finance with their own Bank or Credit Union.
3. DECLINE Dealer Fees and Finance Products.
4. TRADE / SELL their current vehicle for the Best Value.

For more than 40 years, dealerships have EARNED their lowly reputation by being the masters of predatory selling. Dealers stalk victims relentlessly, often ruthlessly treating the most vulnerable car buyers (like seniors, for example) with little or no conscience. Car Dealers and their Finance Officers have no problem creating financial devastation for their customers with over bloated car loans, and quite often do. We point out the traps and the flaws of the process, and help car buyers get through the nonsense without being ripped off. We promote fairness, honesty, and transparency. Join our mission!

The Homework Guy Team provides car buying consumers with information, automotive news and updates, industry outlook, buying and selling advice, and other help to level the tables. The public face of THG is Kevin Hunter and the master negotiator, Amazing Elizabeth. Tons of time and research goes into every show, with several projects always on the table, all with the goal of getting it exactly right. From Automotive News Updates to vehicle shopping advice and assistance, The Homework Guy Team is the best there is.

This video arms you with information that explains WHY you shouldn't pay Dealer Fees. The information that explains the difference between dealer retail and a private party seller is readily available on a google search: 1) Handle all the paperwork associated with ownership, title transfer and registration. (So why would you pay a doc fee, which clearly is a fee for a service already covered in a dealer retail price?). 2) Cars have been thoroughly inspected and if necessary, repaired. (So why would you ever pay a dealer prep fee when it is clearly already covered in the added cost of a dealer retail price? If they spent more money fixing it, that should be reflected in the price). 3) They have to provide you with a car history check (btw, there are tons of dealers who skip this entirely, even though it's one of their responsibilities of being a licensed dealer. The history of the vehicle they are selling is supposed to be entirely transparent.)

Kevin and Elizabeth, I am looking to buy a new vehicle now. I tried your method of having them email me a OTD price. They included the dealer ad-ones in that price and would not budge on removing one of them. I went in to see if I could get them removed in person. No dice, the sales manager told me that the car I was looking at wasn’t the car for me. I told him no, that’s the right car, this is just the wrong dealership. My wife and I walked out. Time to move on to the next dealer.

Great Education Video, I followed your steps via email, I knew about the fake fees but not all of them. I sent the email and called them out on the 5000.00 Dollars in added fees and before I did this they changed the price of the car 3 times. When I sent them the next email saying I wound not pay for a 3000 dollar paint protection and a 300 dollar nitrogen fee and a 300 tire and battery fee and a 2000 dollar Doc fee and a few more fees. All the sudden they decided to email me saying they would get back to me on this. Never heard back from them, I am so glad I did this before wasting over an hour drive and basically get robbed like I did with my last car dealership that some how over charged me 20000 thousand, how they did this without me noticing I don't know until now after watching these videos. I wish I could show the emails to the FDC I saved them all. Damn Crooks. How does this be allowed to happen without them paying fines or something ? Sucks I did not get a vehicle today but I learned a bit from you. Thank You for your posts.

I agree with Charles. Out-the-door price is key. If you negotiate $30, 000 out-the-door and they want to charge $1 for the car and a $29, 999 "Dealer thumb-twiddling fee", that is perfectly fine.

For decade's before the internet and Social media the Car Dealer's had the advantage. But Now we the consumer's can level the playing field and even take advantage and play these Car dealership against each other. Knowledge and Information is Power!

I like all your videos it is nice to keep people informed as of what they can do to save and the dealer still makes some profit just not so much as they may want. And its easy for me to walk away from a deal after listening to your videos thank you for helping us all being informed, the dealer in our town tells his salesman not to give the customers too much information and you have to be savvy to make a deal or walk

Yes, ask for an out the door price but it must have a breakdown of the costs to avoid paying dealer fees.

Several years ago I did this on a used car. Price was $2800 I told him I would pay $2800 OTD deduct your taxes and fees from that number and it worked.

Traded in a vehicle two months ago placed a banana sticker on the oil filter two weeks later I happen to stop by the dealer to see the vehicle on the lot for what I traded it in in the markup was about 25% but they had a oil change replacement sticker I popped the hood and it’s the same oil filter reconditioning my foot

You should add that motorcycle dealers (Harley as an example) have lots of added fees as well. I am looking for a new bike and here are some of the added fees over MSRP. Doc fee $589.00, electronic filing fee 199.75, prep was 273.00, tire fee 2.00 dollars, tag agency fee 85.00, doc stamps, 117.25. Battery fee 1.50. And that was just one dealer. Also the bike was 2k over MSRP to begin with with then makes me pay more in taxes which makes the payment

I'm still getting emails from a local dealership (owned by a dealer group) that never sent me an OTD price on a vehicle I was interested in, but they want me to come in and make a deal. Meanwhile, I bought a car over 6 months ago.
