Apple officially CANCELED the M1 Extreme Mac Pro! Here’s why..

I think I've finally figured out WHY Apple decided not to reveal the new Apple Silicon Mac Pro at their WWDC event, as well as when their future M2 Extreme Mac Pro is coming.. Let's talk about it!

UPDATE: Amethyst says that the PCIe slot is 16x, not a full MPX. So no GPU add-in card support at all. SoC package only!

Why do I have this weird feeling that the upcoming Mac Pro is going to disappoint in a few ways? While it will probably be fantastic at video editing and a few other tasks that Macs are traditionally good at, I suspect that if it does disappoint it will in terms of flexibility by not having enough PCIe expansion, not having upgradable memory and video, etc. Apple should avoid the trap of making the Mac Pro too limited.

Absolutely agree - M3 is what's needed to fix all issues and allow Apple to go into full mass production on a scalable chip. Also with the 3nm chip, Apple can select between 3 variants, , i.e. controlling between power and efficiency that will be placed into various products optimising for their ideal requirements.

It seems to me that every release of Apple product completely changes the audience the product is for. AFAIK the main reason people were buying Mac Pro were the multiple PCI-E slots (e.g. some heavy audio work).

Thanks. Unfortunately a single PCIe card won’t be enough for pro audio interfaces like Avid Pro Tools HDX and RME HDSPe MADI used in professional studios. BTW, here’s a suggestion for your wonderful channel 🤩 we’d love to see stress tests on new Macs running different pro audio software like Pro Tools, Cubase, Logic, Studio One, etc and see how Apple Silicone is performing (like how you test Final Cut, Premiere Pro, DaVinci, etc). Sadly, majority of test videos on YouTube are focusing on video production; there are quite few on audio production. Thanks in advance, all the best 👏

Simple. Two models. Smaller Mac Pro with 1 slot and M2 Ultra. Larger Mac Pro with M2 Extreme, more PCIe lanes and 3 slots, and more space for adequate cooling of larger chip.

If the new Mac Pro only has one PCI slot, they will lose all the music studios that use three (+) PCI slots minimum to run their studios. Apple seems to be slowly cutting out the pro audio market.

Ok, so looking it up, if I compare a 3090 vs a 3080… a 3090 has something like 20.5% more graphics cores but gives like an 11.5% boost in performance on the Aztec ruins (high tier) offscreen test. I don’t find diminishing returns to be all that unsurprising.

Man I hope they don’t jack the price higher. Also remove more of the customization features. These machines are used in environments where pcie cards are used along with a wealth of other items.

Congrats on 1M subscribers! I think the final Mac Pro will have more than 1 PCI-E slot, 1 slot on the prototype is just for testing.

If they allowed the Max and Ultra chips to open up and make use of the increased thermal envelope of the Studio there wouldn’t be a need for a Mac Pro. Those scaling issues need to be addressed.

That 6900XT probably did not work for the same reason eGPUs are not supported by the M1: no drivers available.

That all could change as soon as some VGA manufacturer decided to make a driver for their products.
