How to quickly fix a hissing leaking Toto toilet with a new flush valve cap

Well, Murphy's Law decided to remind me of its existence and within a few days, my Toto toilet began making the same hissing noise! Curiosity got the best of me and, while tinkering, I noticed the rubber valve under the top cap had deteriorated and started to curl - from chlorine and hard water mineral deposits. Back at Home Depot, I discovered the top cap & valve was available for $5 and, this time, an entire flush valve replacement wasn't needed.

Plumbers said we needed a whole new toilet, but me and my grandpa found your video and fixed it no problem. Thanks a ton.

I just rinsed the rubber valve and all other pieces under the green cap you showed in the video under warm water and put them back. I didn't even need to order anything! Thanks Jeff!

You saved me a $150+ plumber visit. And you didn't go on and on in the vid. Thank you!!!

Thanks! Was able to just buy the piece on-line ($8), not the whole assembly, and changed it in 5 minutes. Really appreciate that you posted this.

Thank you!!! We have an older Toto dual flush toilet with the green 528 fill valve. Took a bit to figure out what was going on since we weren't having the typical hissing noise. In our case, the water fill was stuttering on and off, which was then causing loud knocking in the wall. The Korky replacement cap cost $5 at my local True Value hardware store and was the perfect fit, and was so simple to follow your instructions - fixed it in about 2 minutes :-) The previous gasket had completely degraded and was in pieces. So much money saved not calling a plumber!

TY! Saved me a ton of money. I didn't need a new valve. I cleaned out that part and a ton of crap (teeny pebbles) was in there. Put it all back together - done! 5 mins worth of time and free. Thanks again!

Thank you! I've had that hiss for a while now and recently my toilet started taking longer to stop running. Yesterday it got to almost 10 minutes so I had to figure out what to do. Found the part at a local Ace Hardware for $5 after viewing your video and seeing the comments where to buy. Quick easy replacement just like the video and now everything functions as it should.

Appreciate you, sir!! Just wanted to say that I (like many commenters) inadvertently ended up fixing my toilet by taking one of the steps you showed here. After following your disassembly steps, I found that our green valve filter (?) was partially caked with brownish sediment. After cleaning it and putting the valve back together, our toilet water level is back up and flushing like new.

God bless the youtube plumbers. This saved me a huge headache and a bunch of money. $7 part from Amazon and five minutes of work and it's all fixed!

Got the part on Amazon for $7. Home Depot didn't have it. Perfect fix. Same toilet in other bathroom last year I called a plumber and also asked to fix dripping sink. $450 later sink still dripping. Shame I didn't see this last year and save. What a rip off some people are. Thank you Jeff!

You saved my day as my toto toilet is hard to unscrew flush valve (I do not understand why it is designed in such a way ). In order to change valve, you need to disasseble toilet from bottom first. Fortunately I saw your video and get it fixed by only chaging cap!!! Thank you so much!!!!

Thank you much for the video! I did go to Home Depot and Ace Hardware. Neither one of them had the valve part however, Amazon did and you are right very inexpensive. Again, thank you so much for sharing. My toilet is not hissing! Whoop whoo!!!!

Just like to thank you for this tutorial...I see it is 4 years old, but it saved me! I had a gurgle sound coming from my TOTO, and when I followed your directions found that valve to have serious gaps in it. Had to order overnight from Amazon, but just installed it and voila! Back in business! Thank you very much!

Thanks, I googled Korky fill valve and your video popped up. Super easy to follow and cost $4.80 inc tax but best of all NO headache trying to replace the whole unit

Worked great for a different problem: tank filled, stopped, then started filling again several times briefly before finally stopping. That rubber gasket was torn. Picked up the Korky R528 equivalent replacement at Menards ($3.49). Easy repair and it worked! Thanks for the video

Thank you so much. I watched way to many videos and now I know how to completely install a toilet. But with you my friend I can actually fix my toilet instead of just using the hole where the toilet used to be
