Great exercise. Thank you! I have done them in a squat rack as well with the self spotting bar at a height to hold the bar on, and press up from there. Basically the exact same movement... I would feel like the plastic risers would bend or get crushed.

I heard somewhere else that the barbell should be pushed up more towards the chest area, not purpendicularly up. Is there truth to this?

I do this exercise. There is a problem with how he is doing them in this video. Notice that he slides on the floor to get in and out of place. The problem is as you are pushing up the heavy barbell you will have to fight to keep from sliding a bit on the floor. Much like you feel your back sliding a little bit on the bench when doing a bench press. That fight to keep from sliding distracts you and actually takes away strength from pressing upwards. The was yo do this exercise is in a squat rack or power rack lying on a mat. You set the side racks at the lowest height and press from there.

Those risers defeat the purpose of the floor press, you're effectively just doing a pin press. To do a true floor press you need to control the eccentric until your elbows are fully resting on the floor.
