Sometimes if a person had a throat infection, treated or untreated, the throat starts healing by itself. After that, a few occasions, the pain starts persisting, this may be because of inappropriate or inadequate healing of the throat skin, and nerve endings being exposed to the atmospheric changes. Chemicals in the ingested food, or pollution or smoking these things irritate the nerve endings on the skin which is not healed properly, much more than in a normal person’s throat. This leads to a persisting pain for a long term, over and over this kind of pain and inflammation happening will lead to bit of scarring under the skin and this again keeps the pain going for a long term. Salt water gargles however is not really going to help, it is only going to worsen the situation because salt is again a bad irritant of the nerve endings. If you stop gargling, just help the throat skin to heal, that means you have to keep the skin moist by drinking more liquids which are not irritating, like butter milk, lassi, juices, tender coconut. These will keep the throat moist, skin will start healing, nerve endings will get protected with proper cover, so the sensations will slowly get regularized, the pain will reduce. Dryness in the throat, which is probably a sequel of the infection, again, can lead to a lot of pain. Drinking more liquids will improve that also. Clearing the throat regularly, spitting out the mucus is not really encouraged. Retaining the mucus will help the skin healing better and pain reducing faster.
