We think of pain as a symptom, but there are cases where the nervous system develops feedback loops and pain becomes a terrifying disease in itself. Starting with the story of a girl whose sprained wrist turned into a nightmare, Elliot Krane talks about the complex mystery of chronic pain and reviews the facts we're just learning about how it works and how to treat it.

Talk by Elliot Krane.

I can't deal with the chronic pain I'm in. It's been years and it won't ever go away. I just want to live my life and be happy.

I was in a severe accident in which I was pinned by a semi between my car and the cement barrier on the highway, I broke my pelvis, and several bones including some ribs, and bones in my legs. I had to have both my legs amputated and now deal with blinding pain 24/7. I hardly sleep anymore because the pain won't allow my body to relax. I take several narcotic medications and hope to one day find the right doctor that can help me with my pain. I don't think most people realize how much physical pain some people have to deal with.

Going on 5 years with chronic pain. Living my life one day at a Time. Trying to stay calm and hopeful. All doctors I’ve seen can’t seem to figure this out. Can’t lose hope still pushing through.

Excruciating pain 24/7 can put you in a pretty vulnerable state of despair. Everything seems amplified, very loud in the brain. Losing sleep creates a volatile mood but baseline depressed. It's a common post hoc ergo propter hoc.

Dude I'm literally 17 ..and a year ago I got this excruciating back pain ..( I was just exercising ) I thought it'll go away on it's own ..months went by it didn't ..and it's been a year .. I get depressed and regret everything ..the pain just don't go away ..I just want to run, and do many adventurous things but it all feels like a dream . I get jealous of my siblings and friends .But I think I've accepted pain as a part of my life .
I feel like nobody understands this ..but yes I'm not the only one . Whoever have this condition I want to let them know I completely understand you , and yes we can get through this... A lot more power to you 💗

He does not address those people who suffer from daily chronic pain, sometimes for years or decades. People like me who suffer from daily headaches, and no health expert seems to be able to find anything wrong.

This was definitely a great video 👍 However, I think a big part of chronic pain remained unmentioned.

Sounds like you have a pretty positive attitude about your pain. That is so important. I've found, for example, that pain keeps me from wanting to exercise, but doesn't physically stop me. So that is a mental battle, to move the body when it's already hurting. I've learned the art of self discipline, even if I don't always practice it. Best to you.

It amazes me that people can recognize that this happens, but yet scrutinize the people that need help with it, and at the absolute worst, refuse to help.

The sad thing is that this syndrome is present right at the start but few clinicians ask the questions or look for the signs that would identify it. With early treatment the excessive pain can disappear very quickly especially in children. The lack of interest in CRPS was the biggest frustration of my 30 years working in Emergency Departments.

I have back and neck issues, and have had an operation. I’ve had pain for over 20 years now, and in order to stop my body seizing up or getting pain, I get around with crutches. It’s good to hear this talk, as it is clear and to the point.

I have a permanent feeding tube, severe neurological and physiological anomalies. I've been in SEVERE chronic pain for over ten years. My entire life has fallen apart, I have no friends, I can't function, I'm frequently neglecting or taking my anger and frustration out on my family.

Thank you. Some days I wake up like rigor mortis has set in during the night. One time, I was so frustrated by day after day of it that I cried. I noticed that after I cried, my muscles released and I felt a lot better. So now I actually TRY to get a little cry going and don't let myself get upset about it, I see the crying as a treatment!

As a long term chronic pain patient, I’ve tried the physical therapy he mentioned and much more. Didn’t work. Then I got dependent on opioids that I was told would not be addictive. Long term use has caused numerous other physical problems and even surgery, but I’ve learned to manage them with help. My measure of success is “am I functional.” Can I do what I like to do? Avoid opioids if possible. Try everything else first. But if opioids kelp you be functional, then that’s your choice (if you can find a doctor to write that prescription.). I would like to watch a video by people who whipped chronic pain and knows what it is like dealing with the system. Have not seen any like that. Like a former alcoholic who counsels alcoholics. They understand. They have been there. Only then can you appreciate what we go thru to stay out of pain. This is not an endorsement of opioids by any means but everyone is different and should be treated that way.
