Dealing with workplace bullying and harassment in tourism

Learn what to do when workplace bullying occurs, how to resolve conflicts, and how to create an anti-bullying policy,
What is bullying?
Repeated and unreasonable behaviour directed towards a worker or group of
workers that can lead to physical and psychological harm.
Examples include:
● Insults, slurs, and targeted or hurtful jokes
● Physical threats in person or online
● Spreading rumours
● Sabotaging someone’s work, or
○ Being purposely misled about work duties, like incorrect deadlines or
unclear directions
● Overly harsh or unjust criticism
● Excessive performance monitoring, and
● Intimidating someone to participate in an activity they aren’t comfortable
with.
To avoid these types of behaviours, every organisation should have a Workplace
Bullying Policy. Including:
● The definitions of bullying and harassment
● Examples of behaviour which define bullying and harassment
● Examples of behaviour which do not define bullying and harassment
● Policies and procedures to reduce the risk of bullying and harassment
● Disciplinary procedures and the fair grounds for dismissal, and
● Confidentiality agreements.
Worksafe NZ offers free online templates to help businesses create an anti-bullying
policy, and templates to use when reporting bullying.
If an instance of bullying does happen in your workplace, it’s important to:
● Resolve the situation as quickly and professionally as possible
● Report the problem to a manager or HR representative
● Conduct a formal investigation
● Carry out the correct disciplinary procedure to resolve the issue.
● Offer support to the victim(s), such as free EAP Services counselling.
