2 weeks notice so they can fill the position and you get the job reference.

I live in a state where they can let you go without even a day notice. So I always look at it this way. If you're leaving on good terms and your current boss is really good and they're cool about it, sure give them 2 weeks notice and part on good terms. But if you're getting out of a toxic company full of toxic people, give them the same amount of notice they would give you if they were gonna fire you tomorrow. Aka none.

What is my job going to do to me when I tell my manager that I’m looking elsewhere because the goal line keeps getting moved for my promotion, and is now dependent on two people doing their jobs that aren’t anywhere near what I do? Fire me? Not!

You contradict yourself by likening it to giving your spouse a heads up. That's akin to saying that job hunting before you quit your current job is like cheating on your spouse. What sort of logic is that?

I think you should always give like a 2 week or 4 week notice so the company isn't fucked when you leave, it's just obvious curtesy
