I worked a job for 10 years right along side the owner of the company, but people were asking me every week if I was the owner. This made my boss furious. They were shocked to find out I was nothing more than an associate. I opened and closed that store 6 days a week while the owner had the liberty to take his kids to school, pick them up and go on vacations every year. Although he gave me a $1 raise every other year, when I explained to him that i need a living wage, he just ignored me. I told him that I would be looking for another job. I guess he didn"t beleive me because it's been 2 years and he is still mad about it, from what his customers tell me. I learned a valuble lesson. Never let anyone take advantage like that and don't be afraid to leave. You owe them nothing and they wouldn't give you 2 weeks if they were going to let you go.

A 50 cent raise after being there 10 years is not "family". That shows they do not value you or even respect you. Best advice about careers I've heard was "You have to be selfish about your career". My mother had a similar situation where the company she worked for was cheap and paid extremely low wages with no raises. She ended up losing the house due to not being able to afford it and ended up homeless. Where was her "family" to help her then? NEVER remain loyal to a company that shows no loyalty.

His raise didnt even keep up with inflation so he is actually earning a lot less than when he was younger.

I put my two weeks in this past Saturday and they fired me at the end of my shift! Talk about being petty!

It has always amused me how many employers moan about how "disloyal " and "unprofessional " employees are. You know those are the same employers who don't give raises, not even to their best employees and who otherwise exploit and abuse the people who work for them.

There are too many employers that will terminate your employment with no notice or severance, for various reasons, yet they desire a 2 week notice. I have never given two weeks notice and always found decent jobs in short order.

If you leave a company, even for a better opportunity, the chances of they may still talk negative against you, regardless of a 2 week notice or not.

50 cent raise in ten years? Don't even give them a two week notice. They obviously do not respect you. They are not family. Grandma gives you more money at Christmas then this company does it sounds like.

What im confused is why we have to put a two week notice for employer but they will fire anyone on the spot. Why are we acting like this is acceptable?

This is a prime example of why people are beginning to ghost their employers. I don't know how you can run a business when you don't know who is going to show up. Start treating your employees like people instead of a number and this ghosting problem will go away.

I gave notice today at a small company and was very professional. My boss was very upset and there was a lot of tension. I don’t know how I’m going to work the next two weeks. My boss took it very personally, which bothers me because I really care about her and the firm but it’s time for me to move on. 😢

I just gave my 2 weeks, working as a dishwasher for minimum wage, he understood why I needed to leave, I'm going into a factory job that pays more with more employee benefits.

I agree with Dave’s statement on leaving, however I feel his attitude is wrong on the other side. If I value my employees and they’re wanting to leave my company, I’d want to know why and if they’re valid issues I’d fight to keep that employee and resolve issues. I wouldn’t say there’s the door you’re free to go.

Who did he work for? Ebenezer Scrooge? What type of man sits at a job and doesn't get a raise but once in ten years? And a 50 cent one at that?

Advice: don't give 2 weeks. Leave ASAP as if you've fired them. And def do NOT call them "family". 😐

Here's what I do. You go to work to make money not friends. Doing it this creates zero obligation to anybody in the company and there's a lot less drama.

I have a similar story I worked for a small business making local truck deliveries I was there three years while working that job my income wasn't going up so I had to pick up an extra part time job at night working at a casino in the valet dept. I finally had enough of working sun up to sundown and decided to take a portion of my tips and take lessons to get my CDL once I got my license I found a new job and doubled my income with one job. My bosses were very supportive and completely understood It's nothing personal it's business I had to do what's best for me and my family

I used to always give my two weeks notice, but now I have been with the same employer for fourteen years. When people give their two weeks notice at the big multi-national company I work for they let you go on the spot. I think that is what they are training the H.R. department to do nowadays. I don't believe you should give your notice, until the day before you start your new job. I am not risking going two weeks without any income in this day and age. Just remember. Would they give you two weeks notice, before they fire you when they know you have loans out???

WOW thank you! I jsut accepted a job offer and plan to give my 2 weeks notice to a job I held for 15 years. I was going to tell them all the reasons why I was leaving so they can wake up and not have another mass exodus from the firm... but you are so right. Dont throw stones on your way out. Keeping it classy. Thank you!!!
