Having Microsoft mess with my partitions without asking is the LAST thing I want.

And yet, when the news came out that people were having problems with kb5034441, Microsoft & LOTS of technology bloggers were saying to simply go through & re-size the recovery partition, assuming that everyone knows how to do it, or automatically believing that it was safe.

But, I think everyone kinda figures that whatever idiot at Microsoft that did this won't face any consequences, and neither will Microsoft itself.

Honestly, like so many others here, I thank you for your help on this.

As IT support, resizing and shifting partition is not trivial. Plus, requires administrator privilege. Which is not available to all PCs in my factory office. Dear Microsoft, please further automate this patch.

1. 250 MB of *_free space_*
2. What they said in the updated KB article is more alarming:
"You do not need this update if the PC *_does not have_* a recovery partition. In this case, the error can be safely ignored.
We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release."
Therefore, they acknowledged the problem only for those who don't have the recovery partition, but it seems they want 99% of users to mess with partitions as they have a recovery partition. And Windows installer creates 500MB recovery partition by default (perhaps they changed this in builds newer than June 27 2023, idk).

Thanks again for getting the word out about the Window 10 KB5034441 update problem. You were right when you said that they would have to do something soon with all the complaints Microsoft was receiving about it.

If Microsoft is trying to drive people to switch to Linux, this is a great step towards that goal. Denying the user the ability to decline updates, then pushing a flawed update is heinous.

Since BitLocker is only available for Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions, so if you have Windows 10 Home, you cannot use it anyway. Therefore this update is useless for most and why I just set to ignore.

I'm very afraid that these people are going to make a patch that will mess up the partition for something that I don't even need, not comforting in the least :/
it blows my mind if as you said is not necessary for most of us why they are still stubbornly pushing it in everyone?
is not hat dangerous as you have explained (even the few with BL need physical access to your PC) why they haven't removed it until they do something better?

WTF were they thinking expecting the user to change partition sizes? The common Microsoft user has never done that, nor should never need to. Someone's head should be rolling after releasing that. Thanks for the info.

Good. I thought this was only me. I have spent five days trying to discover my problem !

The way things go with Microsoft, if they issue an automatic fix through an update, it'll probably break something else.

Apparently I lucked out. That "update" shows as "failed to install". Is there any way to prevent the update process from trying again?? The Windows Update setting shows that it has thus far tried twice to install it.

Good to know! Thanks! for posting this! I did not update my PC, after what you were saying about it!

This is the problem with FORCING updates, and not having an option to NOT update yet...
They need to stop.

Resizing standard partitions is not a problem it's the hidden ESR, MSR, boot environment, or diagnostic partitions that can be tricky and break things.

It's still a problem though. People like me have no recovery partition so how are they going to solve that? A lot of companies are using bitlocker and some consumers have this also active but i can imagine that a lot of people don't even have bitlocker active. So it's not that easy. The only easy fix i can think of is roll it out as a normal update or make it a selectable option.

Where does the windows update resides, the recovery partition, the Windows partition, or the efi partition?

Hey, do you think the fixed version will be a separate update entirely? Or will I have to unhide the version I currently have downloaded and let it install once it comes through

changing the recovery partition size only works if your restore partition is positioned directly behind the os partition
