microsoft having not sorted out windows 10 yet is exactly why there shouldn't even be a windows 11 yet. The next move microsoft should have made was to issue an improved version of windows 10 with optional rounded corners, consistent dark mode, and drastically improved performance! Microsoft skips around to much. Every time they get a good thing going they abandon it and start another project instead of seeing it through!

As an older person - I don't even know what a 'partition' is, I'm just a simple user. To ask me (and other 'simple users') to mess around with my PC because some automatic Windows update failed (which I'm unable to disable), is something I'm surely not willing to do. How can these people at Microsoft not realize, that the majority of users out there using computers have not studied some computer sciences? I would love to see them if they'd had a major problem with their plumbing and I'd tell them to fix it themselves...

The thing is if you don't use Bitlocker and/or you do NOT invite Hackers into your house then there is no need for this patch In this case the best security is to not let people you don't trust to have physical access to your computer

Their audacity is unprecedented. I can understand that an error can take place. But asking your average Joe to resize the partition will definitely wreak havoc.

Way back in 2014 I built a gaming PC using the Win 7 sp1 worked perfectly for 9 years, only 1 video card failure and had over 38, 000 hours, more than half of which were gaming. It died finally and now I have Win
Win 10 is not nearly as stable as Win 7 sp1. This PC crashes 5 times a week. I never has a BSOD in my other PC, NEVER. This one locks up, BSODs, and crashes way too often.
Now there is an issue with an update and I sure am grateful to have had Britec on my subscribe list and long ago disabled any auto updates (not matter what or who) . You guys do good work and I am certainly thankful for all that you do to help us with PC

they seriously need to be held financially responsible for these issues, if they where legally forced to cover the costs of data recovery and computer service for all of their customers, i bet they would be a tad bit more carefull with proper testing of their updates.

This is far worse than you think. The security issue only impacts people running bitlocker, which is not the home version of Windows. Secondly, they have to have physical access to the computer, and finally some knowledge of your password. Unless you're a CIA analyst or possibly work for a large financial corporation, it is highly unlikely this will impact you. In other words, this was a very small minority of users and should have never been pushed to the masses. Obviously, it was never tested or even looked at since Microsoft creates the recovery partition during install and I would hope they have that information documented in house. Honestly, people should be fired for this misstep, but likely won't be.

Geez! unbelievable! I am very PC literate & have no pblm modifying partitions, but modifying the actual boot Winre partition would even make me wince & turn away before hitting the final enter key. Because of you, I have been delaying updates for at least 2 weeks, thereby circumventing this event. You're my hero Brian. 👍👍👍

The first time I tried to deal with this, I ended up with an unbootable PC. Fortunately, I had a backup system image and was able to restore things quickly. Found the full instructions to resize the WinRE partition correctly later and was able to do things better. An average user would stand no chance.

This is all because they fired their primary OS testing department after Windows 8.1 (according to Barnacles) and had Windows 10 onwards perpetually as global betas, effectively using the Windows user base population of the entire planet as Guinea Pigs.

I totally agree with your assessment of this ridiculous situation with this download problem. I'll just wait till Microsoft fixes this problem and not use me as their guinea pig!

For the average user the advantage of using Windows over Linux was that one didn’t need to constantly need to enter commands in a text box as everything was presented with a nice graphical interface. These days I find myself having to use a command prompt in Windows more than opening a terminal in Linux. So something is definitely going wrong in the M$ world.

The funny thing is, I don't use bitlocker and I'm way above required partition size. None of the 'fixes' work. It's legitimately just broken, at least for me. Because I was sick of seeing the failed installation error I ended up hiding it with a tool from microsoft

I think you described the problem perfectly. I've watched a few other YouTube videos on this same problem, and yours was the most on target and easiest to understand. Keep up the good work!

Everyone knows it's not a Windows update if it doesn't break your computer.

i have 530 mb of recovery partitions still it doesn't install

I am starting to take the idea of using a linux OS now, with the transgressions Microsoft has been committing recently. I am testing one now on a separate drive, booting independently because windows now doesn't play fair with dual booting. Have to admit gaming performance under proton is very, very good.

I resized the recovery partition earlier today to 1 GB, rebooted and it installed fine after that. I used the free Mini Partition tool. I thought their instructions were ridiculous too.

I spent four hours trying to resolve this on my mothers PC, this past Saturday morning. In the end, I had to download the tool to hide updates so it wouldn't appear as an error and cause alarm.

I don't know why Microsoft doesn't test the update before releasing it.

My Windows system survived a patch from 7 to 10 and several hardware upgrades (including cloning to M.2 SSD which Win7 wasn't enthusiastically supporting at the time). Every day it's a miracle that this Frankenstein monster still boots and works.
