I’m actually rereading the hobbit now, and I like how closely they captured the description that the cloak lent to Bilbo was too big for him. Because he left home in rush and forgot to bring a hat, so the dwarves lent him an extra cloak… designed for a dwarf and therefore much too big for Bilbo.

2 things I love about this: the dwarves are all staring at lil Bilbo and they all have different expressions from amusement to annoyance and everything in between. Also, some of the dwarves have their beards TUCKED INTO THEIR BELTS!

I love the alternate depictions of dwarves and hobbits. I remember reading The Hobbit and to me "dwarves" were like garden gnomes or the Snow White dwarfs - so they're little guys and then there's Bilbo, a Hobbit, and he's also a little guy, but like, different little. And then there's Gandalf and he's big enough to ride a horse while all the others struggle to cling on to ponies.

Tove Janson is the artist! Even though her style is silly and cute, she took designing characters for the hobbit very seriously and did hundreds of sketches to practice. She is the author of the Moomin comics.

The way the illustrator drew Gollum in that book was so bad (Innacurate) that Tolkien had to go back and change the way he described Gollum in the books so other people wouldn't imagine Gollum as something similar to what the illustrator drew.

I just realized this but most hobbits genuinely look like children, even they are fully grown adults (bilbo was 50 when he went on the quest) and they just carry them like a child, and even dwarfs can pick up hobbits.
