You know, for all of Bilbo's complaining about the food, his fellow hobbits cleared him out more thoroughly than the dwarves ever did.

An introvert who loves food, comfort, and peaceful quiet, suddenly has 13 boisterous, uninvited guests who eat all of his food, start throwing his dishes through the air like hackysacks, and then start guilt tripping him for not wanting to risk his life for a bunch of strangers who essentially forced their way into his house and robbed his food supply... And then he ends up going on the journey anyway, where he constantly gets pushed into being the first one in danger, despite having the least amount of experience.
I love Thorin & Co, but man, Bilbo has a monumental amount of patience.

Remember that The Hobbit was ultimately a children's book that Tolkien wrote prior to the LOTR book trilogy which was targeted at an older audience.
The dwarves annoying Bilbo at Gandalf's prodding was 100% meant for gags because kids find it super funny when persnickety adults get annoyed.

yeah but credit to the dwarves where it's due, they did *all* the dishes. they were "guests" (at least, they thought they were), social convention doesn't expect them to clean up after themselves when invited into someone else's home but they did it anyway.

We can assume that the Shire probably has hospitality customs, and that, in fact, all the Free Peoples do.

Hospitality customs have a *loooong* history (we're talking recorded mythologies from pre-Christian times, implying that the people who knew those mythologies would be familiar with the customs), and almost every real-world culture has (or had) *some* form of custom that basically says "you are obligated to feed, water and shelter guests". There are a *few* more parts to those customs (the fact that the dwarves *kept* asking for more, and that Gandalf pointed out stuff Bilbo had in his pantry, would be *extremely* rude and could *technically* be seen to be a breach of the rules of hospitality on their part), but Bilbo allowing them in, feeding them and watering them would be a thing that he, as a respectable individual, would be socially expected to do, and his turning them away could have seen him socially-ostracised in the Shire.
