Bilbo was the 1% the rest of the hobbits worked a lot farming.

This is an ideal life. Add friends and a loved one, then it's perfect.

You can do that just fine if you're rich like Bilbo was. The average Hobbit was depicted as basically doing hard labor a large percentage of the time though - even if they still found time to enjoy their feasts and so on.

They had to grow their food after all, and it isn't as though they had invented modern industrialized farming equipment.

I really think people should learn just how hard it is to do your cottage core hobbies as the means by which you do not starve to death.

I too wish I was rich and could retire in the countryside while someone else does my work for me

Moving from the big city to a small town was the best decision i ever made. Slow living cured my mental health, my anxiety, my depression, I feel content on a daily bases as my default!

Hobbit fans do not understand how much backbreaking work subsistence farming is

I, too, would like to be a hobbit. To clarify further, not a bagins, just a regular hobbit who doesn't leave the shire on some insainly dangerous adventure. I want to be like the hobbit at the beginning who shakes his fist at Gandalf for going by too fast.

Would be SO much easier for people to do if 3 people didn't hold more wealth than 150mil people combined.
There is a clear line drawn between a decrease in the QOL of the lower class and an increase in wealth for the upper class.
Very clear.

I like how wanting a simple and fair life is now viewed as lazy and selfish

I said this once, and a friend went on about how farming is hard work.... no shii Sherlock. At least it's not a corporate hamster wheel of never getting recognized for your efforts, then having to switch jobs to get a pay raise. I'd rather be poor, covered in mud, wrangling goats, but going to be fulfilled. I grew up doing that, I know what I am getting into.

Tell me you don’t know how much work farming is without telling me

Sounds like actual heaven to me. My life is good and I am blessed, but we still have the grind. Hopefully I can experience this one day

Hobbit life is so idealistic that it’s unobtainable. Suffering from success.

Actually it’s just being Amish or what people perceive to be Amish.

Imagining that kind of life as "slow and easy" is hilarious. It's obvious this was written by a city-kid who has zero clue how much back-breaking effort that lovely breakfast takes to produce, especially if you're doing it all yourself.

What this person really wants is to be rich. Which, fair enough, I think most people wish they could have that, but if you aren't born to wealth, the only way to get it is WORK.

I want the slow life: it involves owning land and a nice house with fresh delicious food from a variety of climates and seasons. Someone else better grind. But I wanna chill.

The true Hobbit dream comes from having that community. Whether you're a rich Hobbit with a large smial or a hardworking farmer with too many mouths to feed - you're all family, one way or another.

Which means, even if you're struggling, odds are there's a neighbor or two that will help look after you. A cousin could show up once a week with pie she just baked for you. A distant aunt makes clothes and blankets for all the little kids in the family. You're landlord understands that everyone had a hard winter this year, so he lightens up collecting rent, tells you to invite him over for tea more often and asks after your kids health.

The dream isn't about being rich. It's about having a community that *cares.* I'd work hard, every day, if my presence and trade were appreciated by the people around me.
