The difference between Smaug and Lobelia is that one is a vile, ancient terror whose reason for being is to sow terror and indulge in bottomless, obscene greed, and the other is a dragon.

Quick reminder that at the end of the book of Return of the King, it is revealed that during the Scouring of the Shire, Lobelia Sackville-Baggins caused such a ruckus despite her advanced age that Saruman straight up threw her in prison so he wouldn't have to deal with her shit.

Yeah, i think this is quite intentional. Bilbo goes out to save someone elses home only to return to his own home nearly lost.

But with the gold he got for his adventure, he can then retake his home too.

Its exactly like this in lotr. The hobbits return to the shire and evil has finally found its way there. But the hobbits learned on their journey and can easily handle that now

Bilbo was stealing from a thief who took someone else’s home and belongings. So he could’ve stolen his spoons back from the Sackville-Baggins.

Bilbo and my grandpa have a lot in common. My aunt moved out of his house and stole everything as she went. We came home to an empty house after the superbowl. And now, after neglecting and abusing him for 3 years, she's trying to sue for the house.
