Following reports of Russia evacuating civilians from the city of Kherson last week (10/19/22), rumors emerged that the Russian military would follow suit. Now, however, those rumors have been called into question.

Speaking to the BBC, Ukrainian war spokesman Oleksii Arestovych said there were no signs of the Russian military planning a withdrawal from Kherson—in fact, quite the opposite. Russians are instead bringing in reinforcements to the city to defend it.

Kherson is a strategically important city in the Russia-Ukraine war. As a gateway to Crimea, the city is imperative for Russian advances in the south of Ukraine, particularly along the Black Sea coast towards Odesa, and Russian control of the city is a prerequisite to ensuring fresh water access for Crimea. For Ukraine, recapturing one of its largest, most populous, and economically viable cities would mark a milestone in its counteroffensive efforts, while also opening up the possibility of reclaiming Crimea later in the war.

Whether Russia will end up fighting for the city, and what the outcome of such a battle would be, remains to be seen.

By withdrawing now to the other side of the river, Russia reduces risks to troops of flooding if Ukraine blows dam or is forced to retreat across river under fire. The Dniper provides a wide natural defensive border.

After civilians brought to safity there wasn't really much point left to fight in a very disadvantaged pisition, even though Russia still dominated.

But a giant river in your back with all the problems this generates isn't really an area you would like to fight in.

No that river is a natural blocker and the other side of the river is higher ground on top of that.

Full support is no problem anymore, no need to cross a hundred of m wide river anymore for that and even more not the on going threat that the Nazis with NATO support somehow manage to destroy the dam as they try since weeks.

It's already been done. They sorta scooted, moved equipment, blew bridges but left informants to give information on Ukrainian troop movents, IDs and strength so they can dial in artillery. Ukraine military planners are not so worried about Kherson as strategically as one may think. They are more focused on Crimea and Kherson is a jumpoff point to it
