Russian forces to withdraw from Kherson, Ukraine

Russia's military announced it's leaving Kherson, Ukraine. Its withdrawal is possibly the most significant and humiliating setback Russian forces have suffered in the 8-month war. CBS News' John Dickerson speaks with George Beebe, director of grand strategy at the Quincy Institute, about this major development.

Thanks for reminding of the "difficult decisions " statement from a moth or so ago. Surrovikin inherited more than one "difficult" problem and he has been solving them. The Ukrainian advances of August were also a shortening of the Russian line. If one looks at the Readovka or the pro Ukrainian maps, one will see that the areas Russian AF pulled back from are shown in gray. They form few very clear salients or "bulges" in the Line which created some problems for the Russian army. Kherson was actually the last one. A "salient" is a peninsula that sticks out into enemy territory, surrounded by definition on three sides. If the last side is also cut off by a river, there is a baked in danger of the kind the Russians faced in. Kherson. .By removing the salients two problems were solved at once, the "bulges" were removed and by doing so the line was also shortened. The length of the contact line the Russian had to defend became substantially shorter., and therefore easier to defend. Now behind this shortened line Surrovikin is creating hardened lines of defense in depth -just as the Ukrainians did for 8 years .Behind this hardened defense the Russians can build up for an offensive. Tactically Russia gained much even though another PR loss is suffered . Russians are not good at waging PR fights. I Note that the NATO /Ukraine force seems to be in no hurry to advance into Kherson . This is largely due to the fact that its losses over the past two months in front of Kherson have been enormous -about 12, 500 KIA and several dozens of tanks and a couple hundred other vehicles. .There are legitimate questions. Some fear (without any evidence ) this is may be another misguided "goodwill" gesture, . Another question is this, since the river that cut Kherson off from Russian held territory remains a problem, and since it cuts the entire country, when will it be solved ?Although maybe that second question is answered by the withdrawal from the left bank
