Why is Russia Retreating from Kherson

Reports are suggesting that Russia is preparing for a mass evacuation of Kherson in anticipation of a major Ukrainian offensive in the region. This would be very embarrassing for Putin, so how would this impact the war and its public support in Russia?

3 of best jokes in 21st century:
"We will take Kyiv in 3 days "
"Im not a quitter im a fighter"
"We are spreading democracy"

It's not a retreat, it's a special withdrawal operation.

Thank you for doing this. Even as Ukrainian, I find your reporting very useful.

There are too many news stories and it's hard to distinguish important. Love you for highlighting big stories and explaining them in context.

Once again, Putin is not loosing, he is merely failing to win. Slava Ukraini!

If Vlad has studied some history, then he should be careful not to push the army to the brink.
In 1918, men of the Imperial Germany Navy mutinied after receiving a suicidal order, and their action led to the birth of the Weimar.
The same goes to the Tsar.

A few terminology corrections:
* There's no such thing as "Donetsk People's Republic", it's a territory occupied by russian terrorists
* russians are not evacuating civilians from Kherson - they're deporting them

I've heard Ukrainian forces say they don't believe that Russians are truly retreating from around Kherson and are actually setting a trap. Leaving troops in plain clothes in the town's around Kherson. Even if this is completely false it could really slow down the Ukrainian advance as they have to check everyone one and every house.

I think it's worth mentioning that Pavlivka is extremely well defended, as Vuhledar is very close to the north and at a higher altitude, plus the way roads in Pavlivka are layed out allows for complete control over the village from Vuhledar. Attacking Pavlivka without first taking Vuhledar is basically suicide.

Correction at 6:13

They're on the East not the West of the Dnipro, (or rather more South East of the Dnipro).

They only evacuated artillery because it more safe and usefull on the other side of the Dinipro river. I really would like Russia to retreat from Kherson, but it seems more like they are digging in for winter.

Thanks for this. It's actually quite difficult to get a concise and accurate daily summary of what's going on militarily - here in the UK, the main news channels produce excellent reports from on-the-ground journalists showing the human cost etc. but it doesn't give you the bigger picture of the latest military situation. you've got yourself a new subscriber.

I think it is important to be careful here
I have read several Ukranian soldiers and activists calling for caution about Kherson; rusnia clearly will not give the city up so easily
Some suspect that they are preparing to completely destroy it during the battle

As soon as the russians start retreating from Kherson, I'm waiting for a Melitopol-Berdiansk-Mariupol offensive just to disrupt the most of russian movements

Correction?
Set-up 3-defensive Russian lines on EAST (not west) bank of Dnipro.

After taking Kherson, Ukraine wont try make a disastrous attack across the Dnipro River, that would be suicide, they will instead attack South from Zaporizhzhia which is already on the east of the river.

Audio engineer here - your sm7b, whilst it’s a high rejection mic, isn’t quite killing the room verb. You probably will need to treat that room a bit with broadband absorption.

So nice of you to cover the oft-neglected frontline of **checks notes** Curzon, Missouri. Now about that Kherson….
