My only problem is that based upon experience, Russians lie when the truth would have served them better.

Ukraine has been very patient in it's efforts to free Kherson. I am sure they will continue to move forward with caution and keep destroying Russian assets.

Great news about Kherson but saddened by the news of the death of British SFO Simon Lingard fighting alongside the Ukrainians around Bahkmut. It took a Russian shell to kill this hero. A northern lad from Great Harwood yet he travelled over two thousand miles to fight for the 'freedom' of other people. How noble is that? Another hero amongst heroes all with the same objective, a fight against oppression. Great respect to 'Grimmy' and deepest condolences to his family. We will remember him.

There was an update today that a Volunteer from Canada was killed near Bhakmut yesterday, when he was part of a 12 man team that went on a mission. He was a 33 year old Farmer, who had previously done two tours in Afganistan. Condolences go out to his family.

Something that I am worried about is that residents , still in Kherson, have been reporting that Russian soldiers have been storing “equipment” in cellars.
I hope this is not explosives

I think after the north bank is cleared, the next Ukrainian push will be in Zaporizhzhia, to isolate the remaining Kherson forces on the south bank, and give the Ukrainians a safer avenue rather than primarily crossing the Dnipro. It also gives them access to Crimea.

Civ Div actually made a pretty good tactical rundown of Bilohorivka, saying that it's pretty darn difficult to capture Bilohorivka. There's a huge artificial hill there from an old mine and the Ukranians can see everything because of the high ground advantage.

I hope this isn’t an Admiral Ackbar ‘It’s a trap!’ moment

Sounds a lot like an "empty castle stratagem" to me. Especially with how the Russians love their scorched Earth retreats

Aloha Paul, thanks for the fine reporting. There is no question that Kherson is untenable for the Russians, but that actually argues for a scorched earth (or drowned) strategy. If you’ve evacuated productive citizenry, and the Ukraine forces are concentrated, then WMD are applicable. There are continuous reports of Russian soldiers donning civilian clothing. Enough to portray civil war Street fighting as Ukrainian vs Ukrainian? I’m sure better strategists than myself are watching this closely, but I’d still counsel caution and disbursement.

For further confusion, the Left and Right bank is actually opposite of what was highlighted in the video. Banks are defined by the direction of riverflow, which is southgoing.

1:50 They actually called the right and left banks of the Dъněprъ river, pravoberežie and lěvoberežie in Ukrainian. Present-day Ukraine consists of two major Ukrainian medieval states separated by this river: Rus on the right bank and Severia on the left one. This particular historical region is known as Zaporožie «behind-the-rapids».

Paul, if it was for me, all Ukrainian town names would be pronounced the way you pronounce them. ;-))) You are making such an effort, I wouldn't understand them any other way. Thanks for your coverage, I listen in every single day. Let's hope, this nightmare will end as soon as possible. Meanwhile, I'll keep tuning in. All the best from Hamburg!

Concept of left and right bank is pretty easy. When you stand with your back to the source of river the bank on your left hand side is a rivers left bank, same applies for the right bank. On a map, draw an (imaginary) arrow along the river towards its mouth and again, right side of the arrow is the right bank, left side is the left bank.

Paul -- regarding the east/west vs. north/south river banks, I think that just reflects the difficulty of naming the banks of a meandering river. To eliminate this kind of confusion, I recently learned that a standard naming convention is to name the banks left/right based on the direction of the flow. So someone standing in the river looking downstream would name the bank on their left "the left bank", and the bank on their right "the right bank". I found this naming curious initially especially for a river flowing southward, but I guess it makes sense.

With river bank names, I think we should all agree to say "left bank" and "right bank", which is the bank to your left/right as you face downriver. That removes any confusion, particularly for rivers that meander significantly.

Probably some people do this already.

EDIT - in fact in the news story that you read it sounds like they were using exactly this terminology.

a retreat under pressure is difficult to execute perfectly. I can see any withdrawal turning into a rout somewhere .. and if the Ukranians can exploit that, its going to be ugly.
