Also, if you are finding full pull ups hard, try using a bar that is set low down, and try 'incline' pull ups. This is where your body is at an angle and you are only really lifting your upper body, as your legs are being supported by the floor. You can use this exercise to build up strength to be able to do full pull ups if they are difficult. Good luck :)

If you want to get good at chin ups. Unless you're overweight Just keep trying them. If you want to build muscle that's a different story. But as far as chin ups are concerned. Have fun with them. Grab a chin up bar and put it in random doorways. Then whenever you walk through the doorway, grab onto the bar and try some. When your watching tv and an advert comes on just try a few chin ups. If you can't do 1. Just jump to the top of the bar and slowly lower yourself. If your heavy, get back to me

I've read that doing chin ups is the best for increasing bicep height. Here comes the flood of comments telling me differently.. lol but I'd love to hear them. I want to know the most effective bicep workout.

@LolitaSupreme actually, he must have weak lats. The overhand wide grip tires the forearms and lats quicker where as chin ups are largely to do with the strength of your biceps.

There's so many ways to approach exercise. The best & most simple way is to do what you FEEL like doing - however, it is common sense to not work out the same muscles two days in a row. For example, I will go to the gym today and workout my chest and triceps. I will work out hard but not focus on how many reps or sets at all. I will just do my very best and not get caught up in counting numbers. For a begginer, it is best to do body weight exercises like chin ups and press ups and squats.

@robinho1979 you should start out on the assisted machine so you can do full sets.

@drew2pac you are right got the iron gym pull up bar a bout two months ago!! could only do 2 chin ups and not even a pull up!! now i can do 9 chin ups and 6 pull ups not bad!! i only weigh 170!!

You can do a full body workout 3 times a week, that will get you fit, but the progress for individual muscles will be slower, as you are having to use energy for your whole body. Example - the other day I did some leg extensions for my quads, then after I decided to do some chin ups - as quads use lots more energy, I had very little left for my biceps, and I couldn't make any decent progress with my chin ups. Therefore, attempting them at all was counter-productive.

@7moooo1 That's because you have a stronger back, compared to biceps. Chin ups works the biceps more than back, and vice versa for pullups.

Try and do as many full pull-ups you can throughout the day. Its called greasing the groove. Don't think too much about it. Just make it a habit to try some pullups whenever you see a bar lying around. Like if the adverts are on and I do 10 pushups. 10 pushups are nothing, but if i watch 10 adverts, thats 100 pushups spread throughout the day.

@robinho1979 Yeah I wouldn't worry about being able to do just 3. Some gyms have assisted chin up/pull up machines with a counter weighted plate, but for fast results just take the training wheels off and really try to force out as many chin ups as possible with your own bodyweight. I started a few months ago being able to do 4 or 5 in the first set. But now I can do closer to 7. It's slow going, but you'll improve.

@lassekkk Seems to me his hands are on bars which have an angle I have never seen used before. So... I dunno...neutral grip perhaps?

@robinho1979 you will be surprised at how quickly you can build it up. i avoided them because he guy i trained with did 30 super wide grip pull ups - i could do... 1 at best lol. but 6 months and doing 15ish. just crack on with it - you will get there

Free form chin up and pulls up I'm so weak. I might give it a go at the gym next time, I hope I can do at least 3. You have to start somewhere I guess!
