German Shepherd ATTACKS Small Dogs - Dog Training Tips

In this Q&A I address a viewer whose German Shepherd is attacking small dogs. The dog has done it before and still does it. Needless to say, this is a people problem and I address it very bluntly in this video.

No punches pulled. This is really stupid and needs to be addressed.

I love Visionary Dog Food and feed it to my dogs:

Thank you, thank you. I've been telling clients this for the last 50+ years that dog parks, play dates etc. are not necessary and potentially dangerous. Dogs are pack animals and those who live with you are the only pack they need. Even my top performing dogs, who spent a lot of time in areas with many other dogs, did not interact with those dogs. In fact the whole idea is that they are so happy with me and doing whatever it is we are doing together that they totally ignore other dogs and people.

What I really love most about this guy, is that he's blunt and very truthful. I personally don't want to engage with every stranger I meet. I don't expect that out of my dog either. Just politely walk by and ignore, is all I ask. He's not sugar coating in any way what so ever. I like that in both doctors and trainers of any kind. Truth hurts, but safety and real life realization should come 1st. He can says what he wants, (because it's true.) Without customer service pleasing BS. I enjoy his videos.

My 1 year old belgium shepherd is an excellent guard dog in the home he loves people and other dogs, trouble is peoples reactions to him can be really negative because they generally don't understand dogs behaviour and he just wants to play. Ideally I would like him to not be interested in what others are doing so he can be off lead in the river. People pick up their dogs when we are about and when their off lead dog approaches mine on lead, they act as though my dogs the bad one when he play barks. I even had someone's little dog off his lead run to my dog and attack him and they told me to back up even though he was on lead. I tried to explain that if my dog was vicious he would have killed their dog by now. Humans are the cause of the dogs behaviour and I think I choose dogs over people from now on. People need to be reeducated. My 100lb dog is friendly, loyal and has a soft gentle soul. What more can you ask for.

Huskies have really high prey drives and usually don't do well with smaller dogs, that combined with a big high drive German Shepherd is a bad mix. Backyard breeders really have to stop mixing dogs.

I love this. So many feel a gentle leader is a good tool. So is a hammer (to clarify for those that dont understand illustrations, hammer when used for construction purposes of course). But ANY tool when used incorrectly (which many owners do) it can cause a lot of harm. My dog is friendly to other dogs but I still dont like for her to meet them, never know what they will do. And greetings can go wrong in a second and face to face means considerable damage can be done.

My gsd/pit is reactive toward other big dogs (especially other gsds) but loves to play with little dogs. Unfortunately nobody wants him to play with their chihuahua lol, and I'm not interested in finding out what happens the one time he decides to react to a little dog. So, we go for lots of walks and runs, but never get anywhere near other dogs and he seems happy enough without that interaction.

My Labrador is scared of German Shepards, if he’s on the lead he barks at them if he’s off the lead he runs away, I don’t know why he reacts like this, perhaps one was aggressive towards him one time but usually they are just a bit boisterous. He doesn’t react like this with any other bread

Yes💯My dog never meets other dogs either. She gets her entire fulfillment from me. I had a man that was being walked by his two out of control aussies. He had them on a double clip leash thing on harnesses. I put my GSD in a sit next to me. He let his aussies pull toward my dog. I said stop she is not friendly. My dog then growled. The nerve of some people

My German shepherd turned 1 3 months ago and has started to be aggressive towards our little dog, he will push him into a corner and paw at him until he tries to get away and then he will attack him very aggressively. This never happened before this point. They are both not neutered males and the chihuahua is 2. Our German was raised with him from when he was a puppy and up until a month ago they slept together and seemed to get along. Our chihuahua is skiddish and is scared of him after he went after him. We are looking into professional training in the area and he is totally fine with our mid size female beagle, she is fixed. Just seeking some advice as I stumbled upon your page. Thank you

Obviously I'm not the only one who thinks halters for dogs are strangely cruel.
If the dog runs to the end of the lead, what happens except that the dog gets its neck cranked round (ouch).
I don't understand how P only people can recommend them

@Robert Cabral
PLEASE HELP! My German shepherd is 7, we got him as a puppy. We had our bichon is 12 and we had her when we brought him home. He has started to attack her just out of the blue it seems. If he wanted to hurt her he could kill her. He has bitten her but when we get him off of her. He has his arms wrapped around her. They were in a crate together the first time. She had no wounds but he wouldn’t let her go.
They have always used the same food and water bowl. They are never around the bowls when this happens. It just seems out of nowhere.

Just came across you, I have a question if you wouldn't mind, I have a Female German Shepherd 8 months old 77lbs and a 3 yr old Male Beagle Aussie mix 48lbs, 2 times now the Shepherd attacked the Beagle pretty viciously, to the point I'm afraid if it continues she might seriously hurt or kill him!! The first time it happened the Beagle was outside not listening when he finally came in after a hollering his name the shepherd flipped out and grabbed him by the back of his neck and wouldn't let him go for awhile, the 2md time roughly 4 months later she attacked him again. This time they were both finishing eating and walked away, the Beagle went back and looked in the shepherds bowl, when the shepherd got close the Beagle quietly growled and she flipped and full on attacked him again on the top of his neck. She wouldn't release him until she was ready and that's with me trying like Hell to get her off him. Any other time in between these 2 encounters they get along fine, she's actually a very calm and obedient GS as is the Beaigle/Ausi. I'm curious if she could of killed him if she wanted to, are those warnings or did we get lucky and how can I fix this ? Thanks

Ps. Whenever we get loud or even yell at the Beagle for something the GS starts going into this like protection mode and it seems to set her off, it's almost like she thinks she's defending us over the Beagle!! I want to get ot fixed asap...Thanks

Our full German shepherd is a good boy with small dogs however his play style can scare people that aren't familiar with it. He loves our neighbor's little dog (not sure breed sorry) and when they approach he lays down a semi crouch and then pounces forward and their dog rolls over submissively. Then, they both chase each other playfully. I agree, you should only introduce your dog to other dogs who will see them regularly or they should be brought up socializing with other dogs regularly. Otherwise, you don't really know how they will react ... and then at dog parks hopefully every dog there is well socialized. I would be in constant worry somebody is bringing a non socialized dog who might attack mine

I don't want my beagle to meet other dogs, just want him to stop howling every time he sees another dog. I guess he hasn't been off the farm enough lately cause our trip to the vet today was awful. I had to tell them I'd wait outside since he let out an ear piercing howl while I was signing in. I'm not new to beagles, he's my fourth one. I've never had one with this issue before. Distracting him with treats and commands only works half the time. I also have a GS, mini Daschund and a Jack Russell, so it's not like he's not used to other dogs.

Robert I’m a fan! However I’ve been a trainer longer than you, I’m an old lady and I’ve trained since 1980 professionally. I finished many dogs utility degree & tracking, and have many accomplishments. But, I am an unknown which is fine with me —I want to keep it that way. I am writing just to say that you are very wrong about the gentle leader. It actually does the opposite of what you Have said. It’s a supreme attitude adjuster, it makes shy scared insecure dogs feel secure. Once they feel secure they have no need to look for an escape route. The reactivity is gone if you use it correctly. I’ve been using this tool since the 1990s when it first came out. As always you can only know how it all works if you use it. This tool is also very easily transitioned back to a flat collar.

I just discovered you about 10 days ago but I have an issue…. A 4 yr old black GSD was given to me because the owner said he couldn’t give it the attention it needed…
So we already had a small dog which he has been fine with for 17 days BUT they both love their toys and he sometime wants hers…. I didn’t see it but I think he tried to take her little toy and she probably growled & snapped Im guessing… bad move.., cuz he opened a small gash about an inch long… not much blood but it hurt her… it really sucks because we didn’t witness it so I can only speculate…
Its the first real problem we’ve had and he’s fine with our cat and we introduced him to our chicken flock and he’s good with them so I think it was jealousy over a toy… sheesh… he’s been really good for the 3 weeks we’ve had him & we’re trying to integrate him into the family…. I don’t care for little dogs personally but she adopted us a couple years ago and we could never find her owner so my wife kept her….
I had 2 male Akitas who both died of old age so Im not really a newbie to powerful male dogs but this wasn’t good and the little one may have started it…. wtf…. Guess I gotta baby sit them till they become good buds which they seemed to be working towards…
Toy jealousy, thats the problem I guess
