One night I was just watching TV, my cat came into the room and started making sounds that I had never heard before, looking all agitated, she kept going in the back and coming out and practically screaming about something, I followed her and saw a man cutting open the screen on my window, he saw me and ran away. It just amazed me, she spent the rest of the night, walking around like she was protecting her territory.

My Rottweiler woke me up out of a dead sleep breathing in my face and shaking with excitement. Someone had gotten in silently through my front door and was stacking my entertainment center contents in the center of the living room and she knew he was there. I thought she needed to go outside so I got up and opened the bedroom door. She bolted and all I heard was screaming and crashing. By the time I made it to the front door all I saw was two legs hanging out of a moving car's window missing a shoe which she brought to me with great excitement. Dogs are the best.

Its the quiet growl to alert you, but not the intruder, That dogs a true threat. Smart boy.

One night, walking my dog, he all of a sudden stop dead in his tracks. Focused at the woods and brush straight ahead. We stood there for a few seconds, then he turned us around and practically dragged me back home. We did this walk daily and I have no idea what it was he saw or sensed that night.. just grateful he felt the need to keep me safe ❤

Edit: Adding info to some comments:
I live in a "rural city" in Canada. It is fairly dark that you need to walk around with lights and reflectors.
Gun laws in Canada = if you know, you know.
My dog is a husky and not the guarding type of breed. He enjoys going out and about, so this particular situation made no sense to me in the moment.
My area is known for coyotes and fisher cats mostly. Though there is the occasional moose or bear. Less, lately due to the expansion of infrastructure in the area.
The critters like raccoons, skunks, etc. and let's include squirrels, my dog would not be running away, but running after those types of animals.
I hope I clarified enough for some and I thank everyone for their beautiful and heartfelt comments ❤️
My dog is now over 14yrs old and is about to leave us. Take care of everyone and everything you hold dear! Bless you all 🥰

I had a German Shepherd, Bear. One night in the winter, when my husband was traveling and I was alone with my baby, Bear went crazy, running through the house, barking like crazy. He finally settled down. When I went outside the next morning, there were footprints in the snow all around my house. I'll always believe he saved my life that night.

I had an Akita/Shephard mix. He didn't bark unless a threat was imminent. When he barked, all the neighbors lights came on, or they would peek to see what was happening! Loved that boy!!! He WAS the neighborhood watch all by himself!

Reading these personal anecdotes of wonderful dogs & cats protecting their owners, it feels a little like sitting around a night time campfire telling scary stories. I want to look over my shoulder, just in case.

Yes sir. About 20 years ago. I answered the door to someone who said he was out of gas and wanted to use the phone. My dog kept getting between the door and me pushing my back and rumbling which he never did. I told the man i didnt think the dog was going to let that happen. I watched that man walk back to his car and drive away...he was so not out of gas. Best pooch ever

We were sitting in my sister’s living room one night and saw a shadow run by the window. It’s a fenced backyard, so nobody should be going by that window. Her Doberman and Rottweiler saw the shadow too and took off for the dog door. The next thing we heard was a man screaming. He thought he’d jump the fence but the Dobie was a jumper and brought him back down until the police got there. This guy had been going into peoples homes that night looking for drugs and money. The police were already in the neighborhood trying to find him. Loved those dogs.

If your German Shepherd does this, take it seriously. He means it. He’s protecting you.

My shepherd was absolutely my kids protector. He has his yard. He did the typical bark at the leaf or squirrel, but being in the woods we have bigger things come around. He had a special growl for strangers or strange animals. That growl always meant I grab my gun. He was never wrong. Even if it was someone I knew but he didnt, he alerted someone/something IS there. If my daughters were home alone he became SUPER aggressive. I had full confidence that no one would get to them without going over his dead body first. He would at least give my baby girls time to reach a firearm.
I miss you Kaiser.

I like how the second dog politely moved himself out of the way.

I had a huge, beautiful German Shepherd growing up, Sheba, she was mine and I was hers. My Dad had a “friend” that would come over and was always whispering to me and trying to get me alone but I was afraid to tell. One day he drove up and Sheba got between my legs and began growling at him. He brushed her off and stepped closer and she jumped at him and ripped into his hand. She protected me that day and it started a convo with my Dad that needed to happen. Miss You, Sheba girl. ❤

You know what' else is scary? When you walk into a room late at night and your cat is frozen staring at something that you don't see.

When I met the girl I eventually married, she was walking her Rotweiller, unleashed.
When we struck up our first coversation, I noticed this enormous dog was just calmly watching me, with unnerving focus.
Pretty sure he would have torn me to pieces if I would have made a move to hurt my future wife.
We became friends, but it took him some time. This dog was present, paying attention, all the time. Wonderful boy. RIP Thor.

Soo relatable and true...
I had German shepherd... One day someone was trying to break into my house from the back door.
I was in deep sleep, chief was sleeping beside me, he got alerted, walked out of my room, which woke me up from my sleep. I thought he's either going to pee or drink water, so i tried to fall asleep again.
Within 10 seconds i hear the most terrifying, monstrous, demonic growl I've ever heard in my life.
And literally 1 second after the growl i hear footsteps sprinting away from my backyard.
I was literally terrified to move in my bed not because of the intruders but because of chief's growl.
I didn't knew chief could do that. He was the most gentle dog ever.
And another 10 seconds later chief just casually walked back into the room, snuggled next to me and went back to sleep.
As I realised chief is still my good ol doggo, i calmed down a bit and got up, lit up the whole house, front yard and back yard, check house surroundings through windows, no one was their, i opened back door and sure enough i could barely make out few footsteps.
I took few pics of the footsteps and reported to the cops next day.
I was doing all this and meanwhile Chief was sound asleep as if he knew he overdid the scaring 😂 and no sane human being will return to the house snd i was safe to walk around the house.
Chief was a straight up gangster.

Dog sat one years ago. I had a pitbull/beagle mix. A man broke in and Pitty headed him off and chased him out the door. GS was found under the table curled up tight. Underneath her I found my 3 year old child. You could not see that baby !! I was in tears

ALWAYS listen to your dogs! My four GSD "babies" alerted me to a robbery happening to the busness next door to me late one night. Police were there in minutes (they all knew my dogs) Robbery was foiled and the owner bought four huge T-bone steaks for my beautiful dogs. This was over 50 years ago. I miss my dogs every day. ❤❤❤
