1. Replace the keyboards/mouse and check if the new are working
2. If Keyboard is only not working then use mouse and on screen keyboard to perform these steps
4. Check if the connector/usb is working fine or not. Try changing the USB ports.

Sometimes you might start your computer but the keyboard and mouse will stop working at the welcome screen and you will not know what to do in this situation. This happens because the old drivers sometimes become incompatible with the new version of Windows. It doesn’t depend if you are using a USB or PS/2 mouse or keyboard because both of them will be stuck on the welcome screen and you will not be able to restart your PC and you will need to manually hard power off your PC by holding the power button.
Also, sometimes the mouse and keyboard might work in Safe Mode but sometimes it will not. So you will have to manually check that. But if the keyboard and mouse work, then it is a possibility that a driver problem was there. So either the mouse and keyboard drivers might have become corrupted, outdated or incompatible with your currently installed Windows. But it is also a possibility that some 3rd party software or driver is causing a conflict with your mouse and the keyboard drivers and hence it might be causing the issue.

Before moving forward please try to check your hardware:

Unplug all USB attachments and restart your PC then again plug in your mouse and keyboard
Unplug your USB Mouse and then again plug it back after few minutes
Try using a different USB Port and see if it works
Check if other USB devices are working or not
Make sure the cable connecting USB Ports aren’t damaged
Try to check your USB Device on another PC in order verify if it’s working or not
Make sure there’s no dirt blocking USB Ports
If you use a Wireless Mouse, try resetting it

2020 in case u run across this problem with the new update u have to shut off the power supply while loading into windows to access troubleshoot options where your keyboard and mouse should work and u have to uninstall the latest quality update from windows once u got that u should be able to load into windows and use your mouse/keyboard and be able to UPDATE your mouse and keyboard driver to avoid the problem in case u wanna reinstall the windows update afterwards.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH! The system restore method worked, what happened was that I accidentally deleted a registry, so when I booted up both the mouse and keyboard were not working! AND fortunately my pc does weekly system restore that's why I was able to recover it.

I fixed this by going into device manager and looking at USB ports, one of them had the caution sign and was unresponsive so I deleted the usb drive. Then I scanned for hardware changes and windows restored the drive and all my USBs worked. Thing is I had to remotely control my computer through a program (chrome remote control) to be able to enter my computer. I was fortune it enough to have downloaded it onto my desktop before the problem occurred. If you can manage to set remote access on your computer then it should be a quick fix, hopefully you didn't have to restore your computer completely. Best of luck!

My kb and mouse works in bios, but does not work on startup and cannot login to win 10.i tried sys recovery and gives me options, but cannot select any bec kb and mouse does not work. tried disabling legacy in bios and still not working. any other work around?

I had to completely re install windows on my bootcamp. I uninstalled an xbox controller setting before my windows 10 side of the computer went haywire. Was the error caused by uninstalling xbox controller settings?

Hi Guys, as I am having troubles with both keyboard and mouse not working at all time but from time to time now for about 3 days, but the PC freezes as most comments below. I went to check and there were Windows updates awaiting to be installed for WIN 10. So I updated the PC and all got back to normal, so sight of the issues with mouse, keyboard or PC freeze. Thanks.
